Im hoping someone can help me with this. My niece joined the Marines about a year ago.
She called me today wanting my wifes identification # for her security clearance (my wife is from Europe). Initially, I told her I wasnt going to give her any of my wifes info. Then we decided it might be in our best interest (no FBI, CIA, etc) to just give my neice my wifes drivers license #. We did, but now wonder why this is really needed. If this was needed, wouldnt the Marines contact us directly? I think something fishy is going on and want to get to the bottom of this. Can anyone here offer us any advice on what we should have done and what we should do now? Isnt it odd my neice is asking for peoples ID numbers? If she is up for some sort of security clearance shouldnt the Marines contact us directly? I just dont like the smell of this. And if we dont give the info, Adolf Bush is gonna send the Marines in on us.

BE GRATEFUL for my neice serving for my right of freedom of speech? Recently a man told Cheney he didnt agree with the his policies and was arrested by secret service. Where is the freedom?
Where is the freedom for the 600,000+ Iraqis that died at Bushs hands? Where is the freedom for the 2000+ dead U.S. soldiers? Or the freedom for the 65,000+ wounded U.S. soldiers.
JOHN KERRY recently made some comments in the news... and he was RIGHT ON the money. My neice is 18, now married, became a smoker (she hated smokers), has signed up for a special operation next month in Iraq and is pregnant!!!! Kerry was right... youve got no future and youre headed to Iraq if you dont get an education. The news media trampleed Kerry for his TRUTHfulness.
On the other hand, its OK for BUSH at a money dinner to laugh like a fat rich cow and joke "WHERES THE WMDs? Heee Heee Hee!! Must be over here! No wait, could be over here!" At the expense of dumb U.S. soldiers like my niece.

The Marines need the information, so they can provide it to the civilian agency that will do the background check and conduct the interviews. If you do not provide the information, then it is possible that they will find it out some other way, through public records, but it will take longer and your niece's security clearance could be delayed, or even denied.
yes, this is perfectly Legit. Yes, your niece was the one to ask you, the military is not in the habit of calling random people up out of the blue and demanding identification numbers.
deopending on the relationship your niece has with her aunt and how high her Clearance needs to be will depend on whether or not you will be contacted for an interview. All the Marines are interested in is finding out whether or not your niece could ever be put into a compromising situation witha foreign governmnet
If your wife has nothing to hide(she's here legally, etc) then there is nothing to worry about. Quit being so bloody paranoid. Be grateful that your niece is serving her country, giving you the freedom to badmouth your president.

I am guessing that you have not been around the military much. The reason for the check is really simple, it's not identity theft or anything like that. You stated that your wife was from Europe, well for certain security clearances they will ask if you have a family member that is from another country. If so they will run a slight background check on that family member, just to make sure they have never been invovled in any type of foreign anti-american group that would try to get information from your niece. Chances are that you have nothing to worry about. The military lets the family member gather this information simply because most family members are more accepting of family than a phone call from someone they have never met. You know for a fact that you niece is in the Marines, but if someone else called and said I'm so and so wit the Marine Corps, you can't prove this person is in the Marines because you have never met them, this is just a better approach.

To answer your initial question - there is nothing unusual going on. If the job she has in the Marine Corps requires a Security Clearance, then she has to fill out this big, long form detailing her history - going back up to 10 years. Where she lived, went to school, immediate relatives, any foriegn born relatives or contacts, references, criminal history (even speeding tickets), all kinds of crazy stuff. Then a government contractor will get a hold of this form and start checking it out, She will get interviewed about what's on the form. Others listed on the form may or may not be interviewed - about her and her character. The other information will be verified with other agencies - NCIC, Immigration, IRS - to make sure she is giving legit info. This investigator then writes up a report and the form goes into "Adjudication" where military officials review everything and either approve her clearance or deny it.
So unless your wife is a known anarchist with designs on the violent overthrow of the U.S. Government, you have nothing to worry about. No one will come bashing in your door to get this information, your neice would just be denied a clearance and have to pick a job that doesn't require one.
This process Has to get redone about every 5 years or so.

Your niece is the problem you have. The Marines do their own security clearances as do all military agencies. They would not care about your wife anyway. My son is a Ranger, my uncle a Green Beret & I have 2 close friends in CIA. They taped their phones during interviewing for CIA, but whatever clearance for Special Forces they needed we never knew they were checking at all.
Your neice is up to something. Sorry - relatives?

Tell you a silly little story;
Went into the AF and because of my job I had to have a "Top Secret Crypto Access" security clearance,,,,,,, no big deal,,,,,, got out of the service and every thing is cool UNTIL I applied for Social Security. The guy at the SS office looks me right in the eye and says "can't do it, you are not a US citizen". Seems that my parents being on vacation in Canada when I was born caused me to not be a citizen. My DD214 says I am,,, My security clearance said I was,,,,,,,,,, but I had to go to INS supply them with birth certificates dating back to the Mayflower and on and on in order to become a real live American.
So much for security checks ! ! !
But from experience,,, even tho' I have dozens and dozens of relatives that live in foreign countries, and was myself born in a foreign country no one ever asked me to contact anyone and ask for information. The asked me for the names,,, and THEY asked for the information.

This is not 'odd.' This is just one example of how carefully people entrusted with our national secrets are screened.
The military needs to be able to check to ensure that an enemy could not use your wife to coerce your niece into revealing national secrets. But they cannot check this out unless they can be sure who they are looking at.
BTW if the clearance is high enough you will be contacted by an investigator from DSS.

The Marines are a division of the Navy, however that's all. They stand by myself. To proper "t m", The Navy covers all facets of fight, air, sea and land. The Navy has extra airplane than the Air Force.
