He is a 8 month old Jack Russell so you can guess how active and eager to eat he usually is. This afternoon he had a brittle dog treats; a roasted ham hoch. Now at home he turned from his dinner and has laid by the fire since - 3 hours is a very long time for a russell. Now it's after 9pm and the vets are closed.
I'm wondering if he has a bowl obstruction and if so, how long can that be in place before he needs an operation?
Thank you in advance to all who will try to advise me.

* Can't believe how helpful readers are! One thing to add. The ham hoch is a round roasted dog treat about 2" to 3" around.
I have 2 Jack Russells from the same litter and they always clean thier food up and normally don't have any problems downing anything.
I will keep looking at answers tonight and be off to the vet in the morning if I see no improvement.

Maybe he ate something that is obstructing his digestive passage, or maybe you are feeding him with something he doesn't like, either way I suggest you to bring him to a vet as soon as you can..☺

I would say that if he's seeming to have no energy and not really eating, it's a possiblity that it's parvo, which isn't uncommon for puppies and a vaccination isn't 100% for preventing it. I had a puppy that did get it even with the vaccine. It helps, just not perfect. Another symptom to watch for is vomiting and abnormal bowel movements.

Hopefully your vet will be able to tell you something in the morning and I do so hope it's not parvo, but if it is, at least he'll have a good chance of surviving it cause you're getting him in right away. Many dogs don't, partly because the owners don't realize what it is and wait to go to the vet.

Hope your pup is better real soon.

You may want to call your vet anyway maybe he has an answering service, I know my vet does. Perhaps there is an emergency clinic near you. How large was the ham hock? What he may have is the hock lodged in his digestive system. No matter what reason you should never give bones from any other animal to a dog. If he didn't digest it, it could be traveling through his digestive system and he may not feel like moving. Missing a meal is not a big issue as when we do not feel well the last thing we want is to eat. Most times it will pass through their system, what you have to be careful about is if any piece that he chewed gets lodged.

Your best bet is to seek advice from someone in the profession, try calling your vet or the nearest animal emergency center.

Your dog should ONLY be given DOG food...
What the h.e.l.l. is a ham hoch??? If it is a ham HOCK you should NOT be giving your dog stuff like that anyway... PORK & CHICKEN bones can be VERY dangerous. Besides, people foods can upset a dogs stomach & cause diarreah. If there is bloating or a blockage you should have taken the dog to the vet before now.
JUST STAY WITH DOG FOOD & STOP GIVING HIM PEOPLE FOOD!!! THEY ARE NOT PEOPLE & THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THAT CAN CAUSE A DOG PROBLEMS....

ALSO, STAY AWAY FROM RAWHIDE!!! THIS CAN ALSO CAUSE INTESTINAL BLOCKAGES!!!

Lay on the floor next to the dog & place your head near his stomach & listen for stomach noises, growling, grumbling etc. Normal bowel sounds will help you to know if the stomach is working correctly. If there are no sounds, I would definately get him to the vet, even if it is after hours. There has got to be an on call vet....

Note to: bladedogsrule
You have got to be kidding!!! They also say that hotdogs are made out of lips & a**holes. Do you believe that also???
I purchase Iams Large breed dog foods & there is NO beaks, feet or feathers... Do you believe everything you are told???
Dog food is for DOGS, people food is for......People!!!! Our digestive systems are totally different. Our bodies use food differently. People food is NOT better for dogs!!! Dog food is formulated to ASURE proper nutrition....

He could have an obstruction from the ham hock. You should not give bones to a dog. I have never had a dog with an obstruction so not sure how long before you should take him to the vet. I would call the vet and tell him what is happening and ask what you should do.

If he starts to vomit and shows pain when you pick him up near the stomach then there is certainly an obstruction. However these aren't always signs. Trying to pass stool and not passing any is also a sign. If he refuses breakfast, or has any of these symptoms, get him in right away.
Edit: apak "people food" as you and so many people call it, is the best thing for your dog. Dog food is made of chicken beaks, bones, feet, skin, and feathers. Does that sound good to you? The only people food that causes problems is greasy nasty stuff that shouldn't be considered food in the first place.

My canines replaced into the comparable way while he replaced right into a domestic dog. Is she petrified of her bowl? Is the bowl too small? that must be a situation. My canines used to think of that if the nutrition is from my hand, it relatively is have been given to be something specific, so he will eat it. yet while it relatively is in his bowl, he won't eat it. Why do no longer you're taking her popular cope with, enable her sniff it and enable her see you placed it in her nutrition bowl along with her popular nutrition. that should entice her to eat it. THen shop on doing it yet with much less and much less until eventually she eats via herself!

I don't think its an emergency. Don't freak out yet, but you should definitely think about taking him to the vet as soon as you get a chance. I hope he feels better.

If he hasn't been eating and hasn't been active he might have Distemper, puppies are more prone to it than an older dog.
When your vet is open take him in for a check up to see what's all going on with him.

I wish the best for you and your pup.

Could also be symptoms of parvo, but if he isn't eating by morning, I would definately call the vet, watch him for eating and drinking, but would call vets anyway, just to be safe
