This is also called a IRN and is used by business to pay employ taxes ect. Just as you have a SSN each business has an IRN number. You can get this on line and for free. I believe the web site is www.irs.gov

you need to call the tax office to get it ,usualy the federal tax id number is for the business to pay taxes.

If you are a sole proprietor you can use your Social Security Number
If you want a tax ID because you are more than a sole proprietor you can get it at www.irs.gov for free.

Go to IRS.gov and apply on-line at the apply for for an employer ein. it should not take more than five or ten minutes and you will get the number immediately
