Why has no one worked out the parables and discovered the truth?

The parables have been discerened. But I think you confuse "facts" with "truths." Facts can be discovered -- but truths must be embraced. The problem with your question is that it implies there's something we overlooked, or simply haven't figured out yet. And that simply isn't the case.

The paradox of existence is that facts are hidden until they are uncovered; but truths are everywhere, openly on display, but are useless unless they are picked up and embraced. The committment to a fact is purely intellectual and requires no personal assent. Truths, on the other hand, require an existential committment of the "Self." And that's why we don't do it. Facts make no demands on us, and truth never stops making demands.

There is a universe of difference between the two.
