I believe Pepperoni, as we know it in America, is considered a type of Salami. Aside from the spices, the curing process is probably different. What gives Salami a particular flavor is the thin white layer of edible mold that is applied during the curing process. But I've never seen Pepperoni with that white mold on the casing.

The interesting thing is, technically the word "Pepperoni" is a bastardization of the Italian word "peperoni" which is a bell pepper. I think that's where "Pepperoncini" comes from.

They are the same. Some people say pepperoni a spicier than salami but actually some salamis are very spicy. Both can be fermented. Don't think about it anymore.

Genoa salami has peppercorns in it, pepperoni is just spicy in general. If you buy genoa salami, get it sliced paper thin, it tastes soooo much better.
