Hi.
I have been studying religion for many years now what I have found is there is not a single person on the plant who has received or for that matter come to know the Holy Spirit. When one does have the Holy Spirit live in their soul they become a Christ.
It is like this, in your mind you have many questions and lack the knowledge of many things about life why this happened why that happened etc. When a soul knows and finally becomes one with the Holy spirit all knowledge is revealed to them if they ask and nothing of the universe is hidden if they seek.
The problem we all have is a lack of will to do the work. The Holy Spirit can't be given to anyone. You will recognise those on the path, who are doing the work because they will never say they have it NEVER why, because one aspect of living the path is knowing you must never stop learning that the mind is always ALWAYS open to improvement. The people who are living the path learn to understand life and the root of all nature. They will always speak the truth. If they don't know the answer then they will say so.

Usually the ones with a bank account that compare to some Hollywood stars are the ones that dont have this holy spirit. The ones that live a meger life serve a purpose that is beyond material belongings and more in line with the teaching of the Bible. These are the ones to trust, not the ones with the TV shows, theme parks and latest in surround sound technology.

You don't. Jesus said that the wheat and the weeds would grow up together. Jesus will separate the sheep from the goats at judgment day.
How can you follow someone if you don't know if he is filled with the Holy Spirit or not? That is your mistake. You follow God, not the preacher. The preacher simply helps you understand God's word, but he cannot be a substitute for God for you. You have to make sure that you are being lead by the spirit, instead of just blindly following a mere human.

I can't remember where it says in the Bible(most likely somewhere in the New Testement though), but, the quote is:
"By their fruits, you shall know them."
For example look at the lives of the late Pope John Paul II & the late Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Both lead very Holy lives, & was it was very easy to tell that the Holy Spirit Was With them.
Another example is Mohatma Ghandi. Although he wasn't Christian, you could tell by the kind of life he lead, that the Holy Spirit Had a Direct Influence on him as well.

Do your homework and make sure your teachings line up with scripture in the Bible. The widespread faith movement is leaking into many Churches, it occurred thousands of years ago. Read what the author Paul has to say in Galations and Ephesians in your Holy Bible. Just keep Reading your Bible and pray the HS has you in the right place of worship. I'm so glad to know of your concern, I hope and pray everyone would have the same thoughts and would have the same concern as yourself. You are on the right path. The only truth is in the Bible. God Bless to you and yours!

Use the Bible as your authority. If what they say does not agree with the Bible, then reject them on that point or points.
5 Characteristics of Fundamental Christianity:
1) Absolute Deity of Christ
2) The Ressurection
3) The Virgin Birth
4) The inerrancy of scripture
5) Salvation through the Blood and nothing else.
5 Characteristics of false cults:
1) Charismatic leader who rejects other traditional Christian leaders.
2) Isolationism(Jim Jones, Guyana)
3) Extra Biblical Authority(Quran, Bood of Mormon, Communist Manifesto etc)
4) Poor Concept of Salvation(you need to be baptized in our chursh)
5) Refutation of the Absolute Diety of Jesus Christ.
Print this for future reference. It will come in handy.,

If you are a Christian, and the Holy Spirit lives in you, you will know....because the Spirit withing you will identify with the Spirit in them. But the key here is not to look at the man in the first place. Keep your eyes on the Lord. He never changes or fails. People fail all the time, because of sin and Satan and temptation and the carnal world around us. But if we keep our focus on Jesus, we aim higher than the sin and corruption around us.

By their fruits you will know them.
Also, some are different organizations,
If they teach something that is not in the Bible, a false doctrine
don't follow
I have my favorities,
I just know that by the spirit.
The spirit and the word maketh alive, but the flesh profits nothing
Good question.

If they speak not according to the law and the prophets there is no truth in them.
By their fruits you shall know them.
Jim Baker and Tammy Fay were excellent examples of false prophets as discovered by their fruits.
You can use the law in Ex 20 to see whether or not the preacher is preaching all of the law. Check out the 4th commandment, for example. Most preachers today are not trying to keep the 4th commandment as it is written. ANd they are telling their followers it does not have to be kept as written.

They are members of the Church He founded, not manmade denominations. Preachers in manmade denominations invariably teach false beliefs. That is not the work of the Holy Spirit.
