So if a murderer repents he is forgiven? God can forgive and remain righteous without atonement? The wages of sin is not death? I thought the law required a payment because God is righteous?

Christians I completely understand and agree that Jesus atoned for our sins... The question is for Jewish people.

JewishGirl thanks again but God's righteousness does not require that a man atone only that he repent and change his ways? There is no payment required from God for his sin?

Jewishgirl: wouldn't that be mans righteosuness not God's what if he wasn't caught by man? he is simply forgiven by god...doesn't that go against God being righteous? isn't he saying it's ok that you sinned because you are sorry..which is merciful but is it righteous?

To my Christian brothers I agree completely with you but my question was concerning the Jewish faith. It is a search for understanding of their beliefs which is the roots of our own belief.

in judaism, you can't simply repent. repentance means nothing. you must both repent and ACTIVELY change your ways.

"Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive." - somewhere in eziekel

and of course, repenting and changing your ways doesn't get you out of punishment for them. that person still must be punished according to the laws of the land he lives in, for whatever he does wrong.

"There is no payment required from God for his sin?"

yes, that would be the punishment i spoke of administered by courts of law

EDIT

"Jewishgirl: wouldn't that be mans righteosuness not God's what if he wasn't caught by man? he is simply forgiven by god...doesn't that go against God being righteous? isn't he saying it's ok that you sinned because you are sorry..which is merciful but is it righteous?"

what are you talking about, its "mans righteousness"? G-ds justice is what creates righteousness, and G-d says that men should create courts of law to punish wrongdoers. its a commandment.

what happens if men don't catch him? G-d in that case does the punishment himself. but if men DO catch him, G-d is not going to double the punishment. a person only pays once for their crimes.

and no, its not okay that you sinned just if you are sorry, thats what i've already said several times. there is ALWAYS something you have to do. in smaller wrongdoings, simply apologizing sincerely and making amends to the person you wronged is sufficient. in larger crimes, a legal punishment is necessary.

Very interesting question. I am also interested in the answer for personal reasons. From what I know about the bible, animal sacrifice was the way to ask for repentance: a death in the stead of yourself.

edit: JewishGirl is informative. Also why are people evangelizing on this non-related question?

lets see did the "law" require payment.

lets take a look at the book of Ester. The Jewish people sinned they repented and G-d saved them... or how about the book of Jonah? Jonah said repent or you will be destroyed and what happened? G-d relented and did not destroy Nineveh

in both cases their was no "atonement" by means of anything more then self affliction and regret

if you want me to continue

Rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and plenteous in mercy, and repenteth him of the evil" (Joel 2:13).

O Israel, return unto the Lord thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity. Take with you words, and return unto the Lord: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and accept us graciously: so will we render as bullocks the offerings of our lips" (Hos. 14:1-2)

yeah how do you explain your own Bible testifying that repentance is what G-d desires.

Forgiveness by simply repenting is not a Jewish belief. That is a Christian belief.

God did forgive human beings interior the previous testomony, that's genuine, and that they did ought to furnish sacrifices for his or her redemption. even nevertheless, God sent Jesus because of the fact the main suitable sacrifice so no one might ought to account for his or her own sins. we can't out weigh our undesirable with sturdy, we do too lots incorrect to be stored by way of sturdy works. God sent Jesus so we could be forgiven and stay for him. God did no longer substitute, and he did no longer make a mistake interior the previous testomony, the Jews of the previous testomony knew Jesus became coming because of the fact God promised that he might come on the start (Genesis 3:15 (the offspring is Jesus)). The Jews have been stored by way of their faith that Jesus might come and while Jesus did come, we did no longer ought to wait for him anymore, he got here, he taught, he died, he rose returned. he's amazingly significant, the Jews interior the previous testomony have been stored by way of faith that he might come, and Christians now are stored by way of faith that he got here and remains with us. Jesus is the main suitable sacrifice, because of the fact he's God's son, and no different sacrifice is as useful. i'm hoping that's an answer you have been searching for, you do no longer ought to agree, yet that's what i think is the certainty.

There is only one means by which man who has been sullied by sin can become clean and holy, and it is by being cleansed and purified with the blood of Christ: “how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? … And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.” (Heb. 9:14, 22, Ibid.) It is explicit in this apostolic teaching that remission of sins is not obtainable by any other means, but only through the shedding of Christ’s blood.

Although repentance, contrition and reformation or avoidance of evil are important and necessary, they are nonetheless insufficient to purify a person who has committed sins and make him holy. His sins still have to be forgiven, and forgiveness is attainable only through Christ’s most precious blood. It is only be being purchased with the blood of Christ that man can be forgiven, justified, and deemed holy by God: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.” (Rom. 5:8-9, Ibid.)

Contrary to popular belief, not all men have been redeemed by Christ’s precious blood and forgiven of their sins. The Bible is quite clear as to who alone are the ones who have been purchased with Christ’s blood, and they are those who are inside the Church of Christ: “Take heed therefore to yourselves and to all the flock over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you overseers, to feed the church of Christ which he has purchased with his blood.” (Acts 20:28, Lamsa Translation) It is the Church that Christ built that He has redeemed and for which He offered His life (Eph. 5:25) since it is His body (v.23) and the one that has a relationship to Him (v.32, God’s Word).

Hence, it is not by the works that man does on his own through which he could become holy and be forgiven, but only through the blood of Christ. Absolution or remission of sin is not obtainable through priestly confession, nor is it obtainable through penitence or benevolence or any other acts that many consider could make them holy. Man must be connected to Christ by being inside His body, the Church, so as to be covered by redemption.
