I have been an elementary school teacher for over 25 years. Unlike past generations when you had three Davids, two Johns and four Mary's in the same classroom, today's generation is completely different. Children accept all types of names (as well as different spellings of names) and unique names are extremely popular! In fact children today have so many unique names, the child with the traditional name is the exception! The attitude children adopt about their name is the one they get from home. A child's self image is reflected in their social environment at school and play, not the other way around. So the most important thing you can do for your grandchild is say Adonis with a big smile! After all, it is Greek for "handsome man who is greatly loved", and I bet he is! God Bless you.

My boy's name is William...My folks actually like his name, but chose a nickname for him anyway. It was something special between the three of them, a term of endearment, so to speak. Noone has a problem with it, and it's never been an issue for any of us. If you look at your situation in this light, and perhaps not so much at the fact that his given name just is doing it for you, it probably won't be a big deal after all. I don't think that I would display critisism over Adonis' name, as someone's sure to get their panties in a wad. On the other hand, your the grandmother...you can do whatever you want, and everyone else can just deal with it.

I have a nephew named Gydeon. They call him Geddy. (like Teddy). It wasn't til years after the child was born that I realized she had spelled his name with a Y. Oh, well....
He doesn't know the difference. He's been Geddy for 9 years and I don't think it phases him.
Adonis will become....Adonis.....The guys are gonna shorten it to "Donny" or something later because that's what boys do. My stepson has a guy friend named "Jackie" not horrible, definitely weird. My daughter has a girlfriend named Gary. Yeah, I said...they named the little girl Gary.
I once made the acquaintance of a man named Pepsi. And one named Stacy (this is Sweedish I think) I guess she could have done worse.
Oh, and I gotta tell you, 20 years ago I knew a girl who named her baby girl LaTrine.

I actually like the name a lot. It's not hard to pronounce, it has a meaning, and it's not lame like Billy Bob or Jimmy.
All kids are made fun of for something- be it their name, their hair, the fact that they wear glasses, etc. Little kids can be cruel, and it's a good lesson to learn how to deal with that before you're thrown to the lions in the work world .
If it bugs you that much, you can always call him Donny or Don. Most grandparents end up giving their children a nickname anyway.

YOU can't do anything about it. He is HER son. SHE chose his name. All you will do is cause heartache in your family if you try to call him anything but his name.
He will not be made fun of. I knew an Adonis in school and he was a WONDERFUL person, a very strong individual.
Just love him and teach him your values and when he is growing up, people will treat him how they are treated by him.
Adonis is not that unusual a name. It's a very nice name.

My mom had the same feeling with almost all of her grandchildren! However, over time, the names all wound up sounding "normal" or "right."
Just use Adonis' name. He will love the sound of his grandmother's voice saying his name. As Andrew Carnage said, "There is no sweeter sound to the human ear than that of your own name."

Adonis is a Greek god!!! what's his middle name? My boyfriend's mother told me that Renee was a common name and that's what im naming our baby girl and it kinda hurt my feelings, but Adonis sounds really unique and at the same time classy.... it may not seem like it now cuz he's a baby, but when he gets older, it should get better.... :-)

Well if she was given a plain jane name she would want the special treatment for her child. My daughter's name is Aurora, and If people don't like it, they call her rory. You can call him Andy or Addy. it isn't a very good boys name and I would too be upset, but life sucks sometimes, learn to take it all in
