Please help! I know I have a good voice, people who I am comfortable with have told me. But in our choir, try-outs always scare me and most of the time my voice does not come out the way I want (all tight and not beautiful). How do I overcome this? Please help

You need to practice getting nervous. You do this by finding other people to hear you sing. Get your family and friends in a room, sing in a church in from of people, etc. Just as your singing is a skill that has to be practices, so does the art of performance.

EVERYONE gets stagefright... regardless of who they are. It usually ranges from nervous excitement to full blown vomitting in the wings.
You have received a few great ideas and suggestions... another thing I would recommend is to use what I call "creative visualization". Before you hit the stage, find somewhere where you can be alone (even if it is only a corner of the room) and retreat into yourself. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and see yourself on stage. Watch yourself giving the performance of a lifetime, and enjoying the performance. Hear yourself singing the best you have ever sung before, and the audience screaming for you. Feel the energy coursing through your body, and know that you are giving the show that everyone else wants to be able to give.
Remember the feelings that you get singing for your closest friends and even just for yourself. Get those feelings back and realize that IT DOESN'T MATTER what anyone else thinks. Sing for yourself, and take them for the ride.
I have been a performer literally, since I was 2 1/2 and I still get the butterflies... even if it is only 30 people in the audience. Just remember one thing... the people in the audience... are not on stage, and they need you to apprecieate the music, because- many of them- cannot do it themselves, and- most- WILL not do it themselves.

Have fun

Try adding a few people to your audience like a few people that you don't know (keep on adding ) and soon an audition will be more comfortable for you and you will overcome your stage fright.

I was in Drama class in high school & I had the same problem. I performed without my glasses! I couldn't see the audience!

the best thing is to pretend that the audience is part of your closest friends that you are singing to and they are not judging you because they are you friends. Also try pretending that the audience is younger than you, you have power and you are no longer nervous.

if you're doing it with other people, it doesnt matter. i had lots of orchestra concerts, and if i mess up, it will be drowned out anyway.
