My husband went to see a specialist in the Roux-en-Y
procedure. He has a few co-morbidites that will qualifiy him for surgery (blood pressure, BMI, inactive thyroid, etc.). Our insurance states that it MAY pay for the surgery, but only after a year of medically supervised weight loss, ($300.00 a month). We, of course, cannot afford that, including the fact that they may deny it after you are out all that money. My question is, does anyone know any safe alternatives to this? My husband broke his leg three years ago and has trouble walking any extended length and due to the pressure of his weight on his leg , it causes extreme pain. It is also hard for him to diet and loose any measurable amount of weight due to an inactive thyroid. He also has a congenital heart defect of disarythmia (spelling?). Does anyone have any ideas? Please, only serious replies, no jokes......

Well, he can start out by changing the way he eats. Help him out, both of you make it a point to eat healthy. He will start to lose weight from a better diet. As far as exercise, he should just walk as far as he can, a few times a day. He will gradually be able to go for longer and longer. He should shoot for 30 minutes of activities a day, even if he can only do it 5 minutes at a time. Also consider getting a stationary bicycle, once again, he can do it for very short periods of times and slowly add on more time and intensity. It won't happen over-night, but I bet within a couple of weeks he will be feeling better and will have lost a few pounds.

Weight loss surgery-like gastric bypass /lap band surgery / stomach stapling and gastrectomy have become very common and very safe now. My cousin got her Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in India. She has lost more than 65 lbs in 5 months and is very happy with the results. The price for obesity surgery is very less in India. My cousin just paid 25% of the cost she was quoted in America. She got her surgery from a company called Forerunners Healthcare.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as bariatric surgery and weight loss surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your Obesity surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.

most insurance companies consider attempts at medically supervised weight loss as a few visits to his doctors office-with weights-and some documentation that says he has been trying-but its not happening--as far as his "inactive thyroid"-his thyroid has to be functioning-at least to some degree or he would not be able to continue to live--a thyroid is necessary to control metabolism--when a thyroid is "inactive"-it is no longer functioning-and your husband would then require thyroid replacement hormones--the dose is based on what his tsh level is at the time--anyway--i hope i helped-i actually get my lapband surgery this next friday--and my insurance company only required a letter from my doctor stating i have been trying to lose weight and the surgery is the only way that will happen! i too had thyroid problems-but mine was truly "inactive"-it had actually died as a result of my immune system attacking it--and had to be surgically removed--i will be on thyroid hormone replacement drugs for the remainder of my life-good luck!
