The sin against the Holy Spirit is unforgiveable only because the person who commits it has become so arrogant and conceited that he/she will never ask for forgiveness.

Here's some information on the subject:

What is unforgivable sin?

Knowledge brings greater responsibility. Pilate’s sin was not as great as that of the Jewish religious leaders who turned Jesus over to the governor, nor that of Judas, who betrayed his Lord. (Joh 19:11; 17:12) Jesus told Pharisees of his day that if they were blind, they would have no sin, evidently meaning that their sins could be forgiven by God on the basis of their ignorance; however, because they denied being in ignorance, ‘their sin remained.’ (Joh 9:39-41) Jesus said they had “no excuse for their sin” because they were witnesses of the powerful words and works proceeding from him as the result of God’s spirit on him. (Joh 15:22-24; Lu 4:18) Those who, either in word or by their course of action, willfully and knowingly blasphemed God’s spirit thus manifested would be “guilty of everlasting sin,” with no forgiveness possible. (Mt 12:31, 32; Mr 3:28-30; compare Joh 15:26; 16:7, 8.) This could be the case with some who came to be Christians and then deliberately turned from God’s pure worship. Hebrews 10:26, 27 states that “if we practice sin willfully after having received the accurate knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice for sins left, but there is a certain fearful expectation of judgment and there is a fiery jealousy that is going to consume those in opposition.”

At 1 John 5:16, 17, John evidently refers to willful, knowing sin in speaking of “a sin that does incur death” as contrasted with one that does not. (Compare Nu 15:30.) Where the evidence indicates such willful, knowing sin, the Christian would not pray for the one so offending. God, of course, is the final Judge as to the heart attitude of the sinner.—Compare Jer 7:16; Mt 5:44; Ac 7:60.

I remember that any act of blasphemy is unforgivable. such as spitting on the Holy Cross or on the Holy Eucharist, or as simple as using dirty words against Father or Son or Holy Ghost.
Other sins may be forgiven, but then again only God can tell you that :)

Technically, it is blasphemy of the Holy Ghost, which is to say disrespecting the Holy Ghost. Phrases such as "The Holy Ghost can go f*** itself" can be found in this destitute category.

EDIT for context: Mat. 12:31 says, “Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.” This is very different from the traditional line of thought insisting that repentance absolves sins.

you are talking about Matthew 12.31

the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit results in the Holy Spirit refusing to offer the unregenerate sinner His conviction. That means that the sinner, no matter how many times the word of God is set before him, will not desire or receive God's direction toward salvation.

In response to your other question (ish), nothing - no sin, no person, no action - can ever take the truly saved out of the hand of God.

hope that helps

Unpardonable would be the correct term - When you blasphemy against the Holy Spirit then you are speaking or doing something that is against what the Holy Spirit would do or say.

Example - When Jesus was asked if He was the Son Of God and He said yes. The Pharisees said he was blaspheming.

If you were to say that the Holy Spirit directed you to speak ill of the word of God OR to do something that is not of God then you would be guilty of blasphemy.

Remember if you or another are blaspheming the Holy Spirit you or another have just bought your golden ticket on the highway to hell.

I was raised catholic. Catholic dogma makes a very clear distinction between petty sins (the kind that you say a couple of Hail Marys about) and the real, serious sins -- there aren't many serious sins. In fact, I dimly recall someone telling me that the only "real" sin is despair -- because that's the only thing that will truly, finally cut you off from god.

If you see the Holy Spirit in action and say it was the work of the Devil, then one would be crossing the line into that dangerous area. It may just have been able to be done while Jesus walked the earth as some think but I think it would be stupid to hear a person you know does not speak your language witness about Jesus to you in your own language, and then say it was the work of the Devil, that would be risking more than a smart person would risk.

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit means when someone goes to their grave refusing to ever repent for their sins and refusing to accept God's mercy.

a sin against almighty GOD! mark3:29 someone who practices sin after knowing it is wrong, talks against GODwhen knowing in your heart what you are saying is a lie or wrong. the bible gives 3 examples, adam ,sodom and gomorrah ,and judas. all knew what they were doing and did it anyway, and GOD destroyed them himself! they will have no resurrection. we can not judge people we have to leave it up to GOD to judge us. as far as dying and going to hell, you are thinking hell fire(READ JEREMIAH 7:31 )IT DIDN`T EVEN COME INTO GODS HEART!!! and did he tell adam and eve if they sinned or ate of the fruit that they was going to hell?(GENESIS 3:3&4 )NO GOD SAID THEY WOULD? YES DIE!NOT BURN FOREVER . NOW TELL ME HOW YOU CAN FEEL BURNING WHEN THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT THE DEAD (ECCLESIASTES 3: 19&20 -9:4-6 ) READ THIS AND USE COMMON SENSE TO REASON.PEOPLE DIE AND WE ARE NOT CONSCIOUS OF NOTHING. LIKE BEING PUT TO SLEEP WHEN WE HAVE SURGERY. GOD LOVES US HE GIVES US A EARTH TO LIVE ON AND ALL THE FOOD ,MAN HAS RUINED IT AND IS SELFISH ,IF WE FOLLOW GODS WORD WE WOULD HAVE NO NEEDS FOR ANYTHING BECAUSE HE TAKES CARE OF US AND WILL SOON GIVE US A EARTH WITHOUT WICKEDNESS( PSALMS 37) SATAN WANTS TO KEEP US FROM THIS SO HE TELLS US LIKE EVE"YOU WILL NOT DIE "genesis 3" so you believe this you will believe in a burning hell too. but what did the bible say? who is right GOD OR SATAN? IS ADAM AND EVE STILL ALIVE?
