well since he has kids, how about a gift certificate for your local video rental place and/or pizza place
I'm sure he'll appreciate it.

Depends on the size of the jam you were in......

If it was something major a gift card to a restaurant....

If it was a smaller jam.....something like cookies (home baked!) is a great way to show appreciation.

A nice simple card that says thanks to go with whatever you deem the appropriate gift.

It depends a lot on how much you want to spend. Gift cards are always nice for anything--gas station near your neighborhood, grocery store, pizza place, home improvement store. The list is almost endless these days.

Buy him a tree or some shrubs for his yard. Maybe a gift certificate at the nearest nursery.

If i was that person, it would be really nice if you gave him something that involved his entire family, maybe like some gift certificates to a restaurant or a gift certificate to a movie store, so they can rent a movie. Or maybe you can offer to watch his kids one night so he and his wife can go out. I dunno though, it really depends on what he did for you =)

He helped you out of a "jam" - get him 2 nice loaves of home made or bakery fresh bread and a jar of home made jam.....
or just the jam will work
:)
