If the kittens are left with the mother and littermates for about three months, you will notice that the mother begins to shoo them away. At that time, she is done nursing and expects the kittens to be on their own. At that point the kittens are emotionally ready to be adopted. They have learned how to play nice, gotten every benefit they could from their mother's milk, and won't have future owners who complain about cats that try to nurse off them or play too rough.

The problem is that most folks separate the kittens from the mother and littermates too soon. Then, you will find the mother meowing and looking for the "lost" kitten. Most shelters refuse to accept kittens before they are three months or three pounds. At least three of them in my area are like that.

Of course, there will always be folks who make the "midnight deposit" at the shelter door. That's how I get whole litters to foster. Thankfully, I have some really nice cats who have nuturing natures, and between my feeding and my cats nuturing, we turn out three to four well adjusted litters a year. Believe it or not, I have a male who will let them nurse at him like a pacifier.
