generally you don't wear black to a wedding (think mourining and funeral- not a good feel) and not the same colour as the bridesmaids!

NO WHITE! And if possible, not the color of the wedding party (I don't know what you know). For a afternoon wedding something a little more casual. For an evening wedding something a little on the fancier side. If you're not comfortable in a dress, dress pants and a dress shirt/blouse would be fine. If the wedding is in a church or religious place, keep the outfit modest and semi-conceled. A safe bet is a knee-length (or a little shorter) is a basic color.

I am old fashioned, so I disagree with black to a wedding. It's the color of mourning. No white, that one belongs to the bride. Try to stay away from the wedding party colors too, if you can.
You never said if it is a day or evening affair. That will also matter to how dressed up you get. Also where the wedding is being held.
Your safest bet is a sheath dress and fabulous accessories. Classy yet gorgeous! If it's in cool area, a trench style coat that goes.

If you want to look really cute, get a cocktail dress. Black is really popular, wouldn't rather stand out from the crowd though? Don't wear red though - it's too flashy! Coral, hot pink, aqua are all pretty colors, or a pretty print. Another attention getting alternative is a trendy dress, go to the dressy section of a classy department store. Pant suits are elegant also with gold jewelry.

A black dress, black high heels and proper accessories.
The last wedding I attended - every woman wore some type of black dress outfit. Sheesh - I guess I received the thumbs down because I decided to change my screen name to Borat for a week just to break the monotony.
I attended a wedding ceremony on 11/4 where every woman was dressed in black - from young to old except for the mother of the groom. Even the bride's sister wore black.
