I am one who believes no martial art is ultimately better than another, some might seem more practical in a real fight. But each has there own advantages and disadvantages, and were created to deal with a particular threat.
That being said you are taught the ginga which all the attacks and denfense comes from. Now in real life being attacked, are you going to do the back and forth movement? are you going to do the more acrobatics moves like flips, handstands, etc?...Hell no...unless you want to get laughed at or kicked in the head as you are doing an au de cabeça. Does this mean capoeira is useless? No I think what you get out of capoeira can be very useful. Capoeira moves gives you great endurance and flexiblity and balance. Also playing capoeira in a roda you learn trickery you can really learn how to not telegraph your attacks and on the other hand you lean how to read other people to get a feel on how they are going to be attacking you. But this is just the principles behind capoeira, the actual attacks may need to be modified to fit your situation and capoeira doesn't teach to disable by any means necessary, and they don't really teach you any good hand striking.
Ultimately it depends on the person and not the style. Will a person who knows karate always beat someone who knows capoeira? Nope, not always, depends on the person, depends on the amount of effort put in ect...And your ability to use what you know to ADAPT to the threat you are in.
I think capoeira is a great supplement to other training due to achieving balance, speed, timing, etc... with practicing it

it is effective, but it relies heavily on your ability to utilize your power in the strikes, and how well you capitalize on your speed and sense of timing.
If you don't have these elements of the discipline under control; you could find yourself in trouble real fast because you can be thrown off balance fairly easily if your opponent realizes what you're doing and finds the weaknesses in the techniques.
it's much like Muay Thai, it requires getting close enough to the opponent and using a lot of power in the strikes when landing them and quickly moving away before they recover from the strike or counter and follow up with their own counter strike, or feinting a move to catch the opponent off guard to perform another technique that they won't be able to counter quickly enough.
the disciplines of Karate (or most other disciplines in Martial Arts for that matter) don't rely so heavily on the fact of speed or power, and focus more on the sense of timing to block and or redirect the opponent's strike and follow through with your own attack.

capoeira looks fun!
I'm sure it is effective in terms of gettin' right down and funky while knockin' up your opponent upside their head with one of those cool upside down single hand stand capoeira split kicks.

I go with the theory that different people need to study different style to maximise efficiancy; Kartae do myself, nothing hidden in it - but lacks ground work which happens in real life

NO!!!! You will be thrown off balance way too easy and end up on ground. Also it's very difficult to hit your target accurately with a such moves.
