only in this year my son started worrying about his poor grades as its dropped to 1.7 GPA. he is very weak in writing & expression because he does not like to read much, english is not mother tongue. he is my only child. he is very shy and not ask questions in class nor go to teachers for help. teachers say that he has to be initiative & they cant do anything if he doesn't approach them for help. i live in a third world country where there is no counselling & no support group available. pls give me advice, thanks!

Comming from a fellow 9th grader only child i'd say your son is probably trying to adjust to the new setting. Highschool is a huge jump, more classes, harder classes, athletics, girls, etc. Id say the best way to get to him is just sit him down and talk to him. Make a minimum grade. tell him if he doesnt get a 75 average hes grounded forever (keep your foot down too mom!) every gradeing period move it up a little bit. Try to have a conference with his teachers and explain to them whats going on. Most teachers will listen to you and try to push him more.

As for him being shy that'll just take comfort time. Untill hes familiar with the new kids and new teachers he might not want to talk alot.

Good luck!

Help him at home to read. Make it fun and enjoyable for him. You can take him to speak to the teachers and find out how they can work to help him and between all of your efforts, he can improve. If he is not English language proficient in a learning environment that is all in English, maybe he is feeling left behind. He will need to be in an English as a Second Language class. Find out too if he is having trouble with other children in school. Bullying is becoming a real problem and maybe he is being picked on for some reason. Communicate with your son, make sure you take time daily to ask how school went, what he did, etc.

Reading and developing a joy for reading is the single most important thing a child can learn. When you become a proficient reader, you can learn anything. Think about it, reading is the basis of discovering new and exciting things. If he spent his whole day reading and nothing else, I promise you he'll be set for his future. Take him out of school because it is the source of his stress and yours. You won't believe the changes he'll make if you give him a chance to discover on his own. Choosing something for himself like art, music etc. that HE'S interested in and wants to learn is the way to real education.

Over 50% of children after going to school and graduating in the US can't read past a basic level. That's after 12 years of school! They are considered functionally illiterate.
Get him out before it's too late if you really want to do whats right because there is no magic bullet to get him interested in going to school. School has a one size fits all mentality and that's no way to learn.

Ask your son if there are any other boys struggling with the same thing in his class. Contact the parents and start a study group after school from 3 to 4. Give the boys a snack, and then assist with homework. Do be present for this one hour. Next week they can go to someone else's house and that mom can give them snack and academic support. Make it clear that either mom or dad needs to be present for that one hour. Actually, since they're boys. Dad would be preferable. Or grandpa may do it. Someone male if you can provide that.

My kids are required to go to after school academic support in the after school program. It takes homework off of me, and their grades improve.

You really just need to encourage him and make the entire learning experience a fun and interesting situation. If he sees it as an adventure then he will be more apt to do his studies. They sell certain books to assist in this and make the learning process more fun. Believe it or not, but if you sit him down and explain to him the benefits of what he is doing, he will listen and appreciate the value behind the education. Just keep at it and everything should eventually sink in for him. Do not despair, and do not give up! Good luck!
