I am doing a hyperthyroidism essay for my medicine course. I am not sure why increase in thyroid hormone causes an increase appetite? Is it just due to the fact that thyroid hormone increases your basal metabolic rate? or is it to do with some other more specific reason?

I don't think thyroid hormone inhibit glucose uptake into cells.
The increase in appetite is related with the rapid break down of energy metabolites.
I'm sure text books contain more details about this.

Another reason is that thyroid hormone inhibits glucose uptake to your cells, so if you're hyperthyroid your cells aren't getting the energy that they need and your body interprets that as another signal to increase appetite. The previous answer is also correct.
