Splenda is chemically altered making it a sweetener not a sugar.

Every thing written bleow is from the SPLENDA Brand website:

*What is SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener?

SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener contains sucralose (SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener), the no calorie sweetener made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar, with no unpleasant aftertaste. SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener can be used virtually anywhere sugar is used. It can also be used in cooking and baking in a variety of recipes. Like many no and low calorie sweeteners, each serving of SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener contains a very small amount of common food ingredients, e.g., dextrose and/or maltodextrin, for volume. Because the amount of these ingredients is so small, SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener still has an insignificant calorie value per serving and meets FDA's standards for "no calorie" sweeteners.

*SPLENDA® is the brand name for the ingredient sucralose. It is made through a patented, multi-step process that starts with sugar and converts it to a no calorie, non-carbohydrate sweetener. The process selectively replaces three hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sugar molecule with three chlorine atoms.

*Is sucralose (or SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener) natural?

Sucralose (or SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener), the high intensity sweetener used in the SPLENDA® Products is not natural. It is a no calorie sweetener that is made from a process that starts with sugar. Although sucralose has a structure like sugar and a sugar-like taste, it is not natural. The advertising and packaging for SPLENDA® Products do not represent the product as “natural.”

BEFORE YOU EVEN THINK OF INGESTING SPLENDA, you would be wise to visit the websites below.

You'll learn that Splenda was actually concocted by some scientists in Britain who were trying to come up with a new insecticide! Yes, that's correct, an insecticide.

Dr. Joseph Mercola has done the research about this and his website is listed below. The second website is a real eye-opener if you really wish to learn about how the medical/pharmaceutical/health care industry is deceiving the public on a regular basis. Remember the tobacco fiasco? Hold on to your hat!

You'd be much better off eating a diet comprised of REAL FOOD: lean protein, low starch veggies, low glycemic fruits, high quality spring water, nuts and seeds.

If you must have some kind of carbonated beverage, opt for a naturally carbonated spring water (Italy has some fantastic tasting waters)--you may have to go to a gourmet shop if your local supermarket doesn't carry a good water--you can squeeze some juice from a fresh orange, tangerine or tangelo and enjoy an excellent and much healthier drink.

Splenda, all artificial sweeteners are best avoided. Sugar consumed on a regular basis can lead to serious health troubles down the road. Give your body what it really wants: high quality nutrients and adequate amounts of high quality water.

SPLENDA® is the brand name for the ingredient sucralose. It is made through a patented, multi-step process that starts with sugar and converts it to a no calorie, non-carbohydrate sweetener. The process selectively replaces three hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sugar molecule with three chlorine atoms. Chlorine is present naturally in many of the foods and beverages that we eat and drink every day ranging from lettuce, mushrooms and table salt. In the case of sucralose, its addition converts sucrose to sucralose, which is essentially inert. The result is an exceptionally stable sweetener that tastes like sugar, but without sugar's calories. After consumption, sucralose passes through the body without being broken down for energy, so it has no calories, and the body does not recognize it as a carbohydrate.

Splenda is a sugar that has three OH molecules replaced with Cl molecules. The body's enzymes do not recognize it and so it does not digest it. Since no energy is obtained from it, it has no calories. The tastebuds still recognize it as being sweet.

carmenPl is probably right, but I still think it IS sugar, just that they take all the good stuff out and Splenda is what you have left.

IMO, it may taste like sugar to some, but it does not sweeten like sugar. Nothing I have tried with splenda tastes as good as if with sugar.

what they do is they take the suger and break it down on amolecular level. they remove some o fthe carbon atoms and replace them with chlorine atoms. this process eliminates the calories and enhances the sweetness. but it also metabolizes into a substance very simmilar to clorox bleach which is bad for your insides. no suger free soda is any better for you than the rest. aspartame metabolizes into enbalming fluid (famaldahide) i cant spell and sucralose(splenda) metabolizes into bleach so your pick enbalm your intestines or bleach them.
