I think that is fine. It depends somewhat on what time he needs to get up. In Ohio where I am from school starts around 9 am. Here, in Ga, where I live now, it starts at 7:45. So that has a major impact on early to bed!!
You probably know if your son needs more sleep or not. Does he wake easily or by himself? Then he gets enuf sleep. Do you need to wake him, is he groggy -- then he needs more.
This is from Kidshealth.org
School-Age Children and Preteens
Kids ages 6 to 9 need about 10 hours of sleep a night. Bedtime difficulties can arise at this age from a child's need for private time with parents, without siblings around. Try to make a little private time just before bedtime and use it to share confidences and have small discussions, which will also prepare your child for sleep.
Children ages 10 to 12 need a little over 9 hours of shuteye a night. But it's up to parents to judge the exact amount of rest their children need and see that they're in bed in time for sufficient sleep.
Lack of sleep for kids can cause irritable or hyper types of behavior and can also make a condition like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) worse.

I have personally dealt with this issue over and over again. I have 3 children, all girls ages 12, 11, and 6. I have had advice given to me from my mom, his mom and everyone in the middle. I have actually allowed my children to choose their own bed time.. let me explain. No two children are the same and for that every child should be treated individually, so to speak. I conducted my own trial and errors so to speak. I tried different times, and also monitored what times they awoke. I was able after a couple of days to determine which child needed what amount of hours a night of sleep for them to function well through out the day. My 12 year old only needs approxiamately 6 hrs of sleep while my 11 year old so totally needs 8hrs, and my six year old the same 8 hrs. So naturally I will not send my 12 year old to bed at 8, cause if i did she would be awake around 3 or 4 in the morning. So my answer to your question is allow for your childs body to show you what or how many hrs of sleep he or she needs as an individual. What works for one child may not be suitable for yours. Good luck!

I think 9:30 through 9:45. It's pretty resonable and should be awake by seven so that gives him...1..2...10 hours to sleep. Which is good for a 9 year old because it is true, a kid has to have at least 9 hours of sleep to be energtic and have a good energy rate so that why by the end of the day he still can't feel tired.

Every 9 year old is different. That seems like a reasonable time though. I let my 9 year old go to bed at 9:30 on school nights, but often if she is tired she'll "lie down to read" and fall right asleep.
If you think he is tired, acting tired, or just not getting enough sleep make it a little earlier. Or start bedtime earlier, but give him "reading time" - that is a good way to even out things between when he wants to go to bed and when he should. My 7 year old lies down at 8:30 but lights aren't out until 9. That way she can work her way to sleep - right away if she is tired, or practice her reading until she falls asleep. And no she doesn't get out of bed 800 times, not even once!

When school is in my 9yr old goes to bed by 8:30. If he stayed up any later I would have a hard time getting him up in the mornings.

It depends what time they need to get up. My 8 year old goes to bed at 9 and has to wake up at 6:45. They need about 10 hours at that age. Adults need 7-8 and babies and very young children need up to 12 hours a day.

no sounds good to me. My nine year old daughter goes to bed at 8:30, but she is allowed to stay up until 9:00 if she is reading for school. Weekends are different as they can sleep in longer so she goes to bed at 9:00 usually.
