Why in the Bible other righteous people are referred to as sons of God?

so should we take the reference of Jesus(pbuh) being the son of God literally? if not, what evidence is there to say otherwise?

In the bible men are not the sons of God..In the bible it says the "sons of God" at the time they really thought that there were more Gods (Jehovah being Father God (Like Zeus) and the other gods being lesser (as in the lesser gods that were below Zeus) Also when the bible says "sons of God mated with the daughters of man " creating giants (titans)..(it would have stated the sons of man mated with the daughters of man otherwise), so even in Christianity they played with mulitiple gods a bit. Thus when the bible also says in Genesis when Adam and Eve ate the fruit, God was worried they would eat from the Tree of Life and become immortal, "they shall become as US and live forever". The keyword is "US" (more than one god)...either that or God was like Cybil and had multiple split personalities...lol
Another FYI, in the bible God says "thou shalt not take other gods before me". What other gods, if he was the only god then the bible would say "no other gods exist, but Jehovah".
Also aren't angels really lesser gods as well?

Simple,

Aramaic is a symbolic language.

When Jesus and the Jews were conversing and the Jews said they were the sons of God and Jesus said. "No you are the sons of the Devil and I am the son of God." Meaning that the Jews followed the ways of Satan and Jesus followed the path of God.

And when Jesus said. "The only way to the father is through me."

Meaning at the time there were many false prophets and Jesus was the only one with the truth from God.

we are all considered sons and daughters of God because we are formed in the image of God. we are all equal in every way. Jesus himself said all I am is son of God like all of human beings.

As His sons and daughters, we spiritually connect to Him.

Christ was more that that. We can't grasp it. He is God's Son in Heaven. A part of God in Heaven.
