ya i feel that way because their just jealous u told agood joke and they just dont want 2 admit it so they say whatever and laugh about when no ones looking!

Watch the facial expressions! If they say, "Whatever." Sulkishly and look sad, then your hurt them and that's not good. But if they say, "Whatever, dude." like my friend says, (though I am not a dude) and they looked pissed, then...omg, they really ARE! But you'll know you got 'em good if they roll their eyes and walk away.

Yeah, but it could just mean that they're slow thinkers and can't think of a good comeback fast enough. haha. But most of the time it's just because you got them good.
