I have owned both types of dogs, and enjoyed both. It really all comes down to you..and the things you like to do, time you have to spend with the dog, etc. Aussies are my favorite and probably the only breed I would have if buying a new pet. I like their vibrant personality, and energy. They are tireless on long walks or hikes, loyal, loving and intelligent overall. Their intelligence combined with energy however, can cause problems unless you can give them a job to do. Basic obedience is a must, and throw in some usefull tricks like bringing in the paper. They should have had their tials docked after birth, and a tail-less dog is great. They do a cute little hiney wiggle instead of a wag, but the wiggle is less likely to clear a coffee table or whack you in the leg, or head :)
Labs are good family dogs also. Do puppy classes early. For some reason my labs did better when started young, 10-12 weeks. Good, calm, smart dogs that seem to have a sense of humor. My labs were good with other family members and pets.
It is great that you are doing a little research. A dog is a lifetime committment. They deserve to go to a home that is prepared!

Good luck

Two different dogs. We have an aussie/border collie cross. I've also had a lab./german shepard mix. Maybe you can find a dog that is an aussie/lab crossbreed. I have to add, in my experience, the aussie is much more well behaved, very smart and very sweet. He's 2 years old and still tries to get in our laps. My lab was very sweet also, but didn't listen very well. That is probably because I was much younger when I had her. Whatever you choose, just make sure you spend time training it and you will have a most wonderful dog. I assume you are thinking of getting a dog, if not, please forgive my babel...:-)

Both will be high energy but the Aussie's are a herding dog and will not tire out nearly so easily as a Lab. Labs are the best dogs in the world in my opinion. I love how expressive their eyes are.

i grew up with labs my dad bred them for hunting, my sister breeds Aussies for show, labs are great dogs for everything, i was not allowed out of the house unless i had a dog with me when i was a kid,for protection, which the labs are good at if trained correctly, my sister lives in a small town and has to travel 50 miles to grocery shop she leaves her dogs in the truck to protect it and they do it very well, they are very good dogs as well breed to herd,it all depends on what u want and how u train it.both are good companions the Aussie just a little more hyper then the lab.

The BEST dog I ever had was a Black Lab/Golden Retriever mix..smart as a 5 yr old child!
Now I have a Golden Retriever, & we rescued her from an abuser when she was 4.
Even suffering as she did, she is the sweetest tempered dog I ever MET!
She is really skittish about some things, but I can only imagine what a NON-abused Golden would be like......
Get one of them if you can.
Labs & Goldens are the 2 top dogs for a VERY good reason!

B labs are one of the most intelligent and loving animals u can find i had one for 14yrs, the best dog i ever owned. very loyal, loving, very protective of their masters and will therefore make good gaurd dogs, have a high teachability index(they learn quickly), obedient, responsive, active. Most of all they are very strong and resistant to many diseases(means less trips to the vet).they also have a long lifespan so u would have your pet longer and develop a bond. hope this is useful
