WHAT IS DONE WITH WITH ALL THE USED GOLD METAL? THERE ARE SERVICES THAT RECYCLE THE MATERIALS AND SEND THE DENTIST A CHECK FOR THE USED / RECYCLED GOLD. YOU MAY ASK IF YOUR DENTIST MAY GIVE YOU SOME CREDIT FOR GIVING UP YOUR GOLD CROWNS.

You have a couple of choices. You can ask for a small credit or if the amount offered does not seem enough, you can ask for the crown. I can tell you that no more than about $20.00 would be an "appropriate" amount. If you were to take the crown to a metal recycler, you would not be offered any more than that. Any time you want to "cash in" a gold crown, they have to melt it and do an assay on the metals before they know the true value of the metal. There is a justifiable refiners fee for doing this and that would be deducted from the value of the metal. Some jewelers or pawn shops will buy an old crown for - you guessed it - about $20.00 and they toss it in the scrap bin until they have an ounce or more so that it is worth paying the refiners fee. Dentists do the same thing. If it's a porcelain over gold crown, it's probably worth only about $10.00 as scrap.

The metal has value but only if it is recycled. Most doctors I know placed them in a bio-hazard waste container and incinerate them. They are your property if you want the value ask to keep the crown. There are many types of metals used in crowns called alloys. Each alloy has a different value. Some crowns are made of yellow gold others white gold. No crowns in the mouth are 100% gold.

good question, technically it would be bio-waste but as its gold and you are the legal owner of the gold and paid for it and gold is a recognised form of legal tender you should in theory get some change given back to you by the dentist depending on weight and purity.

sometimes the dentist will send the old crown to the lab for a discount off your crown, just make sure they pass on the discount to you!

it depends on your dental insurance plan. ask your dentist or the administrator at the dental office.

I'm not sure what they do with the waste metal. I hate to think they re use it.
