a 8 year old boy? My son seems to think 5$ is not enough for a weekly allowance. Would you think that that is too little or too much to give for a allowance?

I think that $5 is way too much for an 8 year old. At this age they don't really even know the value of a dollar.

I don't believe in allowances. Why should I pay MY child money when I support him/her (feed, dress, etc)? What does the child do at 8 years of age to deserve an allowance? What, behave? Kids are SUPPOSED to behave without being bribed. And an 8-year old demanding more? I wouldn't even entertain the notion of debating with an 8-year when I am the parent (supreme benevolent dictator, if you wish). The child is SUPPOSED to help around the home for no other reason than he/she is part of the family! Pay my own child? No, I pay people or strangers I employ, not my own child. Wrong values are being sent out with the notion that the child has to be "paid" or "bribed."

My daughter is a grown, well-adjusted woman in her 30s today, married with children (one a teenager that towers over her) and she is raising HER children the same way! I'm so damned proud of my daughter!

An 8-year old with an allowance? Sorry, I don't agree with you but I respect you and will not comment further. Best wishes.

Ever hear the rhetorical question: "How much is enough?"

I never got allowance growing up and I hated going to my mom asking is she would buy me a magazine or something so for my kids I chose to give them allowance. I give my 12 yr old $5 so I think $5 for an 8 yr old is more than enough. I dont think it is spoiling a child as long as chores are being done and behavoir and grades are good and so on. I know for my 6 yr old who only gets $1 a week she is learning that if she really wants something she needs to save that money and not just waste it on the first thing she sees that she wants and I think that is a good lesson.

That sounds good. Consider how much a CD is, or a video game that he might really want; he has to save it all for a month!
Of course he wants more - he's probably dreamed of $20 a week!
If I can just attach a comment about allowances - I believe kids just need money for "stuff" because they are kids. We don't tie allowance to chores; everyone in the family does chores because we are all living together and things need to get done. We do, however, give extra money for extra, extra work. For example, our son does the cat littter, and organizes the bottle recycling - for those he gets extra. His "regular" chores are taking out the garbage, keeping his room pest-free (!), doing some laundry, and emptying the dishwasher, for example. He is 15. We don't give money for good grades, either, that is his "job".

My mom came up with a great idea with my allowence. She took 6 pennies and numbered each one. When I did a chore or something good I was given a penny. If I had all six pennies by Sunday I could trade them in for my allowance. $5 for an 8 year old is plenty, that comes out to be $260 a yr, thats a pretty good income for an 8 yr old.

I think $5.00 is good enough considering he is only 8. Children at that age should be doing daily chores anyways without any sort of allowance. He is starting to be greedy which is never a good thing at his age. Explain to him that he is only 8 and that chores is one of his responsibilities and that u are simply being nice giving him anything for what he does. There are lots of kids who dont get anything from doing there chores. Tell him $5 is better than $0.

its too much. i never got allowance. When i was little i would do all my chores and obey my parents and every so ofter they would get me a game boy game or (dont laugh) some pokemon cards. if i did something bad, i didnt get squat.

Im 15 and i still dont get allowance. If i need some money i ask my dad and he might give me some. And if i do something around the house(rake leaves, weed the garden, paint something) my mom will sometimes pay me. If i ask for too much my dad tells me to get a job, and i dont hold that against him.

I think it's way to much - I never got allowance and I never gave my kids allowance - As I always told my kids I pay the bills, buy food, pay house payments, buy your clothes games, toys so why should I have to pay you for living in OUR home also? they got money for extras in school but no way was I paying them and they did chores also without pay.
1 time the kids did try to pull the old you should pay me for taking out the trash, doing dishes, mowing the yard crap so I turned the tables and gave them a bill for 1 weeks work breakfast $ 2.00
lunch $3.00
dinner $5.00
cleaning house $7.00
laundry $ 10.00
times 7 days now who owes who?
now when they were old enough to get jobs that was there money to do with as they wanted and after few pay checks they learned how to save for what they wanted.

that depends on if he does chores or not and what kind of chores. if he or if he does stuff like taking out the garbage then $5 is a good number for an 8 year old. one thing i heard is that you should give the kid the same amount of money as their age.
