Check out cragslist, freecycle and ask if your local shelter has a give away book. Also ask at pet stores, they may know of someone who wants to give a pet away.

Yes there is a relative small fee at any Humane society;but you are getting a healthy and very grateful dog or cat. I always go that route and it has bee very rewarding. I've never had any disappointment. The most I have paid was $40 for a kitten that still had to be spayed ...it did get sent from the humane soc. to the vet; when I picked it up it was spayed and had all his shots. All this was included in the adoption fee. Good luck;Es

Pets aren't adopted out free for a reason. People who look for free pets probably don't have enough money for proper vet care, or take them to laboratories for experimentation.

Check with the local SPCA, not free but they use the money to take care of other animals until they are adopted....and the costs vary by county.

Go on petfinder.com, it's a good site that can show you to a local shelter and give you lists of animals up for adoption, description and pictures included! And by the way, thanks for deciding to adopt.
