Tons of people live in the United States who only speak Spanish and we take care of all their needs for them and translate everything into their language. If we went to Mexico would they go to the trouble of translating everything into English for us. Would we survive without ever learning Spanish?

Actually, I spend quite a bit of time in Cancun every couple of years and in that area, the most spoken language is English.

Go figure!

The United States of America is very accommodating being a Nation of Immigrants, have you seen all the languages they have at any DMV I am amazed if it is translated how can they drive in this Country if all the signs are in English? When Americans go to Mexico they learn the basic language to get by especially when they live there. I don't see many signs where it says (We speak English)

Hello,
I sucessfuly learned Spanish after taking a few courses. The first couple of courses didn't do much for me until I tried CDs for my computer from a company called Advantage Language (they're famous because they've won a lot of awards).

The best part is, their course is only sale for a very short time at only $6.95 INCLUDING shipping and handling!!!!!! It's a steal at that price (they course includes 5 CDs).

Of course we could get by not knowing Spanish if we stayed in the tourist areas or with the well-educated Mexicans. However, there is no way Americans would be allowed to go to public schools, get jobs, etc. without some reasonable fluency in Spanish.

Probably. And I don't think it's possible to not know at least one word of Spanish. Because I think everyone knows what gracias means, and would be right most of the time with English/Spanish cognates.

Cognate: Like student and estudiante, words that look or sound the same in two languages.

Yes, there are even English language newspapers. You can watch CNN, Dr. Phil, The Late Show and all that in standard cable TV. And if your work is about speaking English, well, go figure, you don't have to speak Spanish at all.

You could get far because everyone knows english, but you would not be very excepted, or respected not knowint the language. You would just be a tourist, and would be treated like one, and you would not learn ware too buy your "needs" at a cheaper price set up for "locals"..

Sure they would get along just fine... as long as you have a boat load of money. Just pay someone to do everything for you.

We are the only country that caters to foreign people. PHOEEEY!!

If your born here your american, no matter where your from or your status. PHOEYYY!!

If you go to GERMANY/France/Italy/ect..... and have a baby there... your baby is still AMERICAN. (The way it should be)

Very few other coutries go out of their way to cater to americans. Unless they profit from it and for no other reasons.
You go to mexico and a REAL mexican restraunt, its in SPANISH. Your in their country, you go by their rules.
Unfortunately this country is bass akwards.

I wouldn't even if "stuff" was translated. It can be dangerous, tried to tell a mexican couple someone drove off in their truck, then I told a clerk and she shrugged. As I was leaving that couple was walking around and around where they had left their truck.[oh by the way the clerk said it was probably a friend] I'll never know.
