is it safe to eat the pre-made salad mixes bagged in grocery stores? I love the veggie lovers blend but I have been hearing about the people getting sick from eating spinach, etc and I am scared to buy it.

The spinach (and other stuff) in those pre-packaged salads is safe to eat. The spinach that caused the e. coli illnesses recently was traced back to a particular grower in California. Any of the producers of the bagged salads (Dole, for example) stopped using any spinach that may have come from those growers. And it's not likely that you'd find a bagged salad that was manufactured BEFORE the e. coli reports---that salad would be months old, and therefore pulled off store shelves long ago.

One word of advice: even though the bagged salads say "pre-washed" on the bag, you should still wash the greens by immersing them in water, then allowing them to dry (a salad "spinner" works really well). Leafy vegetables hold onto a lot of dirt, so re-washing is recommended.

As long as you check to make sure it does not come from California it is safe to eat. This is where all of the tainted spinach came from. Although it is more convienent to use the salad mixes it is much cheaper to buy the heads of lettuce and make your own. That way you know what you are getting.

I talked to our grocery store manager today, and he is not investing in too much of the bagged stuff yet. He says that 20 states had people get really sick and no one knows the cause. I would not eat it and skip it at restaurants too, until the cause is discovered. Who knows, it could be food tampering?! I hope not because I miss my spring greens so much. My doctor told me to start growing my own, even indoors. It was so simple just to buy a bag and go home and have lunch. Best of luck to you in finding your solution!

I steer clear of those pre-made salad in the bag, because they taste like the bag they reside in.
