I have owned 5 Jeeps over my life and I have to tell you that I wouldn't own anything else if I could help it. My last wrangler I owned for 10 years and put over 200,000 hard miles on it. (I like to wheel and go to moab often) the key to the longevity of my Jeep was that I took care of it and performed all the maintenance regularly. Right now I own a 95 grand cherokee and have had it for nearly 6 years and it has been an amazing vehicle.

There are years where jeep built a better jeep than others. I would say any wrangler 93 or newer with fuel injection will be a better jeep than a wrangler than one that is older and carburated.

Basically if you buy a new jeep and take care of it, it will last as long as you want. If you buy a used jeep take your time and pick one that looks like it has been taken care of, or what I did was since my wrangler had such high miles I had a maintenance log that showed that I took care of it.

Good luck!!

I have heard this as well.

Jeeps were made to be simple machines. They are one of the easiest cars to fix or upgrade. You must realize that they don't drive like that way you think they would. Like previously mentioned, it is a great first car, but if you are looking for a car to last you 10 years with practically no problems, a small truck is the way to go.

Jeeps are definately fun. Few things compare to driving in a summer day with no doors on and the soft top off. Owning a Jeep make you part of a different subculture too.

If you want to learn some general repair skills, go with a Wrangler. Get a Chilton's manual, and find a friend who knows cars.

As far as the reliability aspect goes, I would try to find a YJ (87 - 95). It was the second model of the wrangler family of jeeps and was in my opinion the best model balancing newness and authentic Jeep feel. I'd look for a YJ from 93 - 95. These are more reliable than the new TJ models but are still new enough to where they can be under 100k miles. (ive seen a few, but they are rare)

Jeeps retain their resale value for a long time too.

Hope this helped

If you do a lot of driving, i wouldn't suggest a jeep as a daily driver. They ride rough, and handle weird compared to longer wheel based vehicles. As you mentioned, this would be a first vehicle, and not to try to insult you, but I am assuming you are a young driver, and these vehicles are not exactly the best in inexperienced hands. As far as maintenance and reliability, Jeep earned a bad reputation back in the day for being a weekend driver because "you had to work on them all week to drive them on the weekend". While this may be true of the AMC models, it all changed when Chrysler took over in 1987. The Jeep wranglers are no worse than any other vehicle, given the proper attention and care. I own a Jeep Wrangler, a 2000 model, and have had no problems whatsoever out of it. However, I only drive it on short trips, less than 20 miles at a time. It just beats the crap out of me to drive it too far.

Get the Wrangler. in case you decide directly to bypass Jeepin' you will choose a real Jeep. beneficial the liberty is great, even nevertheless that's not very in a position off-highway. You reported carrying a mountain bike or 2. you should get a bike rack for that. then you definitely can mount your motorcycles on the returned and you have extra area interior. I additionally like looking, trekking, tenting, and my 2005 Wrangler endless has loads of room for my equipment. Mine became until now the completed 4-door undertaking, so that's basically in easy terms an prolonged Jeep. you should appear into that in case you do no longer choose the 4 doorways. each and every of the recent unlimiteds have 4 doorways, so in case you decide on 2 doorways and an prolonged lasting engine get the TJ endless. The seats in my Jeep recline fairly a techniques so in case you should sleep on your Jeep it won't be too undesirable. except you build a pickup to be an off-roader, that's not going to be as sturdy as a Jeep. sturdy success!!!

I think a wrangler would make a great first car. I would make sure its '97 or newer. They ride a lot better then the older ones. They also hold up well.

Just remember that its a small SUV. Its made to go fast or get good gas mileage. Its also may take some time to get used to driving a short wheel base SUV.

Most people say that it is unsafe as a first car, because most people wreck their first car and with a soft-top, there isn't much protection. I like 'em though.
