Otiginally the word Suffer meant Allow, Jesus was saying allow the Children to come to me, for the Kingdom of Heaven is meant for such as these, and unless you become as a little child, you shall not enter the Kingdom

One interpretation, suffer = Be humble, listen closely, and try to obey. Just my thought.

when jesus was saying suffer little children,he was not saying they should suffer but he was saying in his language let them come unto me, don't stop them coming to me, and he didn't mean death either . jesus was saying that children are innocent and have great belief in him and his word and we should not hinder them
