The bottomline is that language is arbitrary at first and convention-based in a second stance. At a given point someone influential decided that was the order to be adopted, and the social group of users accepted it as the norm to be passed on and be commonly understood. (Just like a rose by any other name would still be a rose, but if you said another name nobody else would know you are talking about a rose)

The alphabet is actually based on the Greek letters: Alpha, Beta, Gamma. Don't know the equivalent of "JRV" but it doesn't roll off the tongue as easily.
