I'm British but I've been working as a teacher in Turkey for the last thirteen years so I write from that perspective (what perceptions I've encountered here):

1) UK is rich, the streets are paved with gold.
2) UK is imperialist. This is bad. (Notwithstanding Turkey had its own - Ottoman - empire)
3) UK = Britain = England. (Wales?? Scotland?? - these do not register)
4) UK women are easy/cheap. As proven every summer in the resorts.
5) UK is slightly less evil than US
6) UK has (had) problems with (home grown) terrorists. The IRA are equal to the PKK. Therefore the Irish are equivalent to the Kurds.
7) UK has no ID card!?!? Not possible! How can a country not have one!?
8) UK people can burn the flag, destroy banknotes!?!? Not possible!?
9) UK people don't have proper families, don't appreciate children, don't look after the elderly within the family unit.
10) UK doesn't understand Turkey (and its problems). Everybody should, of course, be attentive to Turkey's needs. Only ignorance/coldness could lead a nation to disregard the importance of Turkey.

A little over a decade ago I had hoped to move to Scotland b/c of a girlfriend that I had met on an exchange trip there... Unfortunately, I learned that - at the time - affording a transfer to University of Glasgow from the US was a matter of both horrible loans and having significant money up front. This was, however, something I saw as a problem of the US, not the UK as I believe that the system of education there was more rigorous and the total cost not much different, but the financial aid deal my government offered in terms of studying abroad was nowhere near what Scandinavian countries or Middle Eastern oil countries offer their students.

End result? The relationship dissolved under the strain of the distance and expense (and the fact that she was dyslexic and considered numerous emails a form of torture). Moreover, I came to think of my country as miserly and more interested in enslaving its populace through personal debt than supporting the concept of educational and personal freedom.

I got a view of the UK heading more in the direction of the USA though and even beyond with ridiculous movements to privatize public interests that could easily become irresponsible and tyrannical monopolies, such as water and the train system. My understanding is that these moves were disasterous in results like lower quality of service along with additional governmental monioring and enforcement expenses paired with a loss of the service income.

Hopefully things have improved for all Brits and not just wealthy investors...

I am part of the hospitality industry in Florida, and I always try to be gracious and outgoing to all of the passengers in my taxi. I have gotten a great deal of enjoyment from music, movies and television from the UK. My outward attitude is 100 per cent positive.

However, the fact remains that I am of Irish ancestry, and Great Britain and Ireland have , shall we say, a complex history. I am aware of the circumstances of my Irish ancestor's lives, and the reasons why they had to emigrate. I do NOT hold any British individuals responsible for anything that happened so very long ago, but that dark shadow is in my consciousness, and I find from talking to Irish visitors that they feel much the same as I do.

I just think that they tolerate us. Musically, they all want to be here. Politically they hate us, and morally. What can we do.. we are becoming a police state with Big Brother watching most of us at some point in time. Answer to that is, if you are not doing anything wrong then you got nothing to worry about. The rest of the world.. they will catch up and USA are just in front of us in the running. Interesting question.

It does not matter. Soon the UK will not exist. It will be just a region in the USE. (United State of Europe)

The EU is your master. Bow down and worship it.
