Best way to train a dog not to jump on people is
1.) Don't think it's cute, it won't be once he becomes full size!
2.) Gently bring your knee up as he jumps up and bring your knee to his chest as you say "NO!" firmly. Do this EVERY time he jumps up on you.

My neighbor would tell me to step on my GS foot when she jumped on me or the knee thing. Nothing with this dog worked for her jumping. Ignoring her made her want to do it more. Spraying her with a water bottle worked for about a week. Shaking a jar of pennies made her go ape. She saw everything as a game period.

I had a white GS when I was a kid. From day one he was a little angel. However he was a lil goofy. They say they are like 3 year olds in a dog body. Get a GS book and read about how they grow up. The goofy thing is normal. At least to what I have seen in my 2 pups and my friend's GS's.

My GS now... just turned 2 and is finally!!!!!!!! FINALLY the dog I prayed she would become. She hardly jumps anymore. She sleeps by the bed. She doesn't eat wires anymore. I love my GS more then anything. Be patient and see what works with your baby. All the experts that yapped orders at me to train my dog. Nothing worked. Either she just grew out of it or the new Cat trained her lol

I have a German Shepard that is 2 and no. They take a LONG time to mature. Mine is a kangaroo. The only way to train them is to take them to obedience training. You will learn the techniques that will teach YOU how to have your dog behave. I learned that I was being passive with mine when I needed to be more stern and that I was giving inconsistent cues to him and generally making a mess of his behavior. I also taught him a trick that involves him touching my hand. I say Touch and hold my hand out away from my body. He is rewarded for jumping up and touching my hand. He is not rewarded for jumping otherwise. Guess what.. He doesn't jump around as much now because he knows that he won't get a treat for that. ALSO Kenneling your dog is a great way to keep him out of trouble and gives him a place to call his own. I thought Oh no that's mean when I got him as a puppy, but after he ate an entire loaf of bread and 5 pairs of shoes, I got him the kennel and we haven't had a problem since!
I am telling you if you are going to have kids, OBEDIENCE TRAINING. It's money well spent!

I think you have to show that there is play time where anything goes and normal time where there is a protocol.

If you give in and fuss, the dog will not learn the lesson, make sure ther is lots of play time, at least once a day, to use it's energy and keep it content.

Ensure you are the 'top dog' rewarding good behaviour with treats and bad with no treats, and perhaps a naughty cushion or room.

If you want any more tips, you could allways watch dog boarstal.

GSD are great dogs. They need a LOT of exercise to use up the energy that they have. So, if you have a safe fenced area for him to run, catch balls, etc. that is good. Also, walk him OFTEN..
Enroll him in an Obedience class, one where you will be his trainer. They are offered through the Kennel Clubs in each area. This will train you to train him and help with the jumping, etc. It will also teach him and you the correct way to have good manners for him.
ENJOY!!

hes a GSD, they are silly, loveley and basically big babies. Getting him neutered wont help much, only for a couple of weeks till he gets over the op. Try filling a plastic bottle with dried peas, when he jumps up shake the bottle it'll startle him and he should learn that he hasn't to jump up (didn't work with mine but it might be worth a try) my dog now thinks the bottle is a toy and tries to eat it lol. Try a long walk to tire him out.

GSD if trained properly will not jump on people. Get him enrolled in an obedience class ASAP. Watch the Dog Whisperer on National Geographic TV station and check out his web site for more tips http://www.dogpsychologycenter.com/tips/index.php You will learn a lot about dog behavior and how to get them to do what you want them to the correct way.
Good luck.

Depends on what you want from a dog. He sounds like a fab dog to me. You and he need to have one to one and get down to letting him know you are the No 1.. and he has to listen to you. He is now of age and can take some learning. Best of luck to you both. I love German Shepherds. And Yorkies.. I got three

My first German Shepherd was like this for his entire 7 years. Viral infection took him from us at that age. He was gentle with my mum though, she's disabled and he learned from being a pup she was different and culdn't be ouced upon. Try soothing tones and 'gentle command' to let him know its not polite. As long as he isn't hurting anyone enjoy!
