You can use shallots instead of the actual onion. Shallots are still onions. they are smaller and still taste like onions but you wont get teary eyed when you cut them. The gases they expel are not as strong as the ones that come out of regular onions.

1.lit a candle.
2.Using a knife, cut a cone out of the bottom of the onion (where the roots come out). The diameter of this cone should be about a third of the diameter of the onion, and about 1/3 deep. Take this piece and throw it away (don’t put it down the disposal!). This piece contains the part/gland that makes baby Jesus and everyone else in the room cry when you’re chopping it up. Once you’ve gotten that piece out, chop off the top, peel, and slice the onion.
3.Peeling and cutting under running water, chopping near a gas flame, and refrigerating onions before chopping, all methods for reducing the volatility of the sulfide that causes the irritation.
4. or the easiest of all use food procesor or onion chopper.

Here's the EASIEST way to have chopped onions WITHOUT tears: Buy a bag of frozen chopped onions and keep them in the door of your freezer. When you need chopped onions, just open the bag and pour 'em out! They're so small that being frozen won't hurt anything -- they'll thaw in just a minute or two -- even faster if you saute them. Also, you don't have to worry about stinky hands or chopping boards.
And, best of all: No tears!

Put the onion in the fridge. That subdues the onion's defense mechanism that makes you cry. The onion is alive because it's a bulb. Keeping it cold really helps. Or you can buy the sweet onions...they don't make you cry. You can even eat them just like an apple....Really!

Yes. First use a very sharp knife. It's when you tear the fibers of the onion that makes you cry. Using a sharp blade prevents this. Also cutting it under running water will wash away any things that will reach your eyes.

Do it fast.
Cut onion in half.
Place cut side down on the cutting board
DO NOT CUT THE ROOT (yet)
Make cuts lengthwise from the center of the root out so the "fan out"
then cut across your initial cuts until you get 1/2inch shy of the root.
cut root off.
Practice and with time you'll be able to do this quickly and tearlessly. It also helps to run your knife under cold water.

Get someone else to cut them - ha ha.
I find having a good, sharp knife is the best solution.
It'll cut straight through the onion and I find that the juices don't spray everywhere.

Chew a stick of gum when you cut onions. The "chewing" motion of your jaw muscles somehow deters the tear glands from making you cry. I've tried it and it works!

Breathe thru your mouth - not your nose.
I used to have to cut up literally hundreds of pounds of onions when I was a cook, I know how to cut onions.

Try turning your fan over the stove and if you have and if you have a light with a fan. Turn them on high. That might help you.
