They should go into the US Armed Forces to defend the US Constitution.
Operation Iraqi Freedom had nothing to do with safety and security.
just like VietNam. Please explain why the Pentagon Papers are still not completely shown to Americans. Both started with lies.
In Iraq it was Weapons of Mass Destructions and in VietNam it was to fight Communism.
In the 1980s the Republicans helped Saddam Hussein and the Muhajadin because both were Anti-communist,so we are pain dearly for them.

Unless people want to
become Commissioned Officers they go to college after their tyme and or take courses while in active duty.
Commissions can come after a four or two year college, but still have to pass Officer Candidate School,OCS
The educational requirements for Warrant Officers are different.
People from Harvard and alike are NOT likely to enter because the current military thinking support war-hawks.
The US Armed Forces have a mentality that is
becoming like the Prussian Military.
The Prussian military was to OBEY and were NEVER allowed to ask questions especially as to why.
The 1st Amendment is severely curtailed so if someone makes a remark that annoys a higher ranking person, that
individual can received punishment from the Uniformed Code of Military Justice and the regulations of that branch.
The US Armed Forces have improve,BUT it still favors Commissioned Officers.
The Hierarchy
Top: Commissioned Officers.
Middle: Warrant Officers:
Bottom: Non Commissioned Officers followed by Enlisted that are not NCO's
For war-hawks

I can't say they asked me how much my parents made when I joined.
I CAN tell you the percentage of enlisted troops who have high school diplomas/GEDs (or higher) and the percentage of commissioned officers who have four year degrees (or higher). The answer is 100% to both. A lot higher than the general US population. Perhaps we're not as uneducated as the anti-military elite would wish.
EDIT: "Eternity" . . . there's a saying among fighter pilots: "Never pass up an opportunity to keep your mouth shut".
I'd mistake you for part of the educated elite, but the junk you threw out makes me question the educated bit.
Your information on commissioning is wrong.
Your analysis of the military hierarchy is skewed.
Your understanding of the UCMJ is slanted and sensationalized. If I were punished every time I "annoyed" a superior . . . ha!
Your comparison to the Prussian Army and claim that we curtail the First Amendment no doubt came from some teacher/professor who knows as much about military science and history as you seem to know.
And your labeling ALL those who disagree with you as hawkish and ignominious can only be described as BIGOTED.
But hey, disagree with me if you want. I'm just one guy who claims to know a thing or two about the military (from the inside).

it depends on your life style...I mean, if you grow your own food don't eat out and don't go anywhere. It could be pretty cheap - especially if you own land and are setup on off the grid energy. If you're like most people, you're in a house or apartment. Take into consideration for rent and basic utilities, food, gas, maintenance items for car(like oil), emergency fund stash, and 20% to save for retirement. My wife and I can eat for about $200 a month lets say, $150 for basic utilities, $200 gas, $350 misc, $100 for car insurance, and $200 to save each month, don't forget rent though...that can cost from $300 on up. I'd expect to pay for a place out here for about $450 - $650(but I'm in the midewest). So, add all that up and you come out to $1650 per month or about $20,000 per year. You can live off of very little and still live comfortably...but the word comfortable is dependent on an opinion. Would I prefer more money? Yes...do I make that much money now, no. Take care to weed out bad spending(like going to the gas station or grocery store every day). Make sure not to waste what you have basically. Frugal spending can really make your life more comfortable if you start recording all of your spending and weeding out things you don't need etc.

You've proved your total ignorance with this question. My hubby has been in the Army for 18 years and has attended college. I have as well. I was pretty well middle class, while he was upper middle class. The high school we attended was very upper class. A good percentage of those upper class men joined the military after high school or college. Those joining after high school went to college during their military career.
Your thoughts hold no basis and no facts. You speak from your butt more than your head. I suggest next time, you come loaded with more than just blanks. As for Kerry's comment, he's a total idiot and proved to everyone what the thinks of the military. I'm quite sure that the military will have the FINAL say in his career and then, we'll see who's stuck and who's educated!!

I don't think you will find a definitive answer, but my household income is above that, my daughter is in the Navy, and I do not take offense at Senator Kerry's comments from a few days ago.
Americans from all income levels still want to believe in Honor, Courage, and Commitment, and choose to serve.
Many true Americans see service as the only way to a better life for themselves and their families. It is not my place to deny or question their goals. I know it is a path out of poverty.

Your stated "zero" is absolute fantasy. In fact, soldiers from middle-to-high income families outnumber soldiers from low-income families by a factor of over two to one. Stop getting your "facts" from people like Michael Moore for God's sake.
I wouldn't be surprised if the number of soldiers who are children of politicians is disproportionately low... but then few of today's Democrat and Republican politicians have any concept of serving others (unless those others happen to be lobbyists).
Vote for a Constitutionalist or Libertarian. Send a message.

This could depend on what country's military you are asking about. In many countries military people make more than $60k per year. It depends on the rank/position of the person, the price of money in that country, the cost of living in that country. You would probably find your answer if you picked a specific country to divert your question to.

"When comparing these wartime recruits (2003–

recorded in Census 2000), areas with median
household income levels between $35,000 and
$79,999 were overrepresented, along with income
categories between $85,000 and $94,999."

Well I know of quite a few whose parents made/make a decent living. That didn't stop them from joining. I know my wife's parents make way more than that annually and my wife has been in the AF for 11 years.
What was your point again?

I disagree with you - what is your source?
I know of Marine generals who own islands near Hilton Head, SC. - they work for government think tanks in DC but they remain enlisted.
For DANNY_G - I made some corrections because I know better than to say that a General is enlisted. I worked with these Generals and I heard all their stories - some firsthand and some from colleagues who worked with these Generals in SC.
