The system isn't complete. But yes, in America a good portion of luggage is now x-rayed. It is a stronger x-ray than for carry on so they usually tell you not to pack film in it. Some places could still hand search - but that usually means they are checking fewer bags as it is a bigger effort.

Oh, and they could take a residue sample of the outside to check for explosives and chemicals.

The best tip is to travel assuming your bag will be x-rayed.

This depends on the airport (and if it is the US or not). Larger airports use dogs, send it through X-Ray or more expensive scanning machines (like Envision) and then search it by hand if something shows-up strange. Smaller airports do a combination of dogs and hand-search.

Spend $10 and buy some TSA-approved locks. That will allow them entry to your checked luggage if they need it. if you use standard locks, they will cut them off. The locks have an indicator if they were opened by TSA.

Regardless, if TSA opens your luggage, they are required to leave a note inside your luggage telling you they searched it.

Outside the US, this is not a requirement.

Airports used to check only about 25% of luggage, whereas they check close to 100% of it now in some fashion. Cargo is a whole different story...

Good luck!

It goes through an x-ray and some cases are subjected to a random search. Don't padlock your case as they will ask you to take the padlock off for this reason. If your case is the one they randomly search there will be a sticker on your case that will tell you this when you pick it up at the other end.
Oh by the way, my luggage has been lost twice recently so make sure your name and address is attached securly to your case.......be sure the name tag won't come off, because it can be a nightmare to find lost baggage.
Enjoy your trip!

I think they do xray or scan checked-in luggage.
