It changes regulary, and although the airline websites list information, the US Goverment maintains this site:
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/index.shtm
It has up to date information on what you can carry on, and what you can check. Note that some foreign countries restrict more items, so always check the arrival country's websites if you go international.

Nothing that can explode, no guns without letting them know, no live animals... otherwise, whatever you'd like.
Each airline's website will have a section on what you can and cannot bring on the plane or check in your luggage. Just go to the site of the airline you are flying to get full and detailed information.

No guns or explosives, no oxygen tanks. The people in security advise against putting in cameras and film. Also, anything of real value like money or jewlery should be kept on your person. Medicine also should not be put in checked luggage, you should carry it. have a good trip

YOU CAN BRING ANYTHING ON YOUR CHECKED LUGGAGE. BUT ON YOUR CARRY ON, YOU CANT EVEN BRING BLYSTEX, IT HAS TO BE IN A CHAPSTICK TUBE. I JUST FLEW TO CHICAGO AND 3 THINGS GOT THROWN AWAY. NO LIGHTERS, MATCHES ARE OK. JUST PUT EVERYTHING IN YOU CHECKED BAGS. DON'T BE WORRIED. THEY DON'T CHECK IT, (AT LEAST NOT IN FRONT OF YOU).
BUT IF YOU ARE LEAVING THE COUNTRY, AT CUSTOMS THEY WILL CHECK IT. THEY OPEN IT UP AND SEARCH THREW IT.
IF IT FEELS WRONG, DON'T BRING IT.
