I am so nervous. I am trying out for C.O.D.A. (all region honor band) on oboe tomorrow. I made 1st chair last year but I am still freaking out. There are 14 9th grade oboes trying out and 4 spots. I'm scared I'm not going to make it. Any advice on how to not be nervous?

You already made it once. The people that haven't made it are more nervous than you are, you just don't see it.

STOP THINKING ABOUT THE AUDITION!
I realize that this is much easier said than done! But each time you find your thoughts running to that place where you're starting to freak about whether or not you're gonna make it, STOP. Tell yourself to stop it!!! Take several long, deep breaths. Exhale slowly and imagine the stress going out with each breath. Relax.
Perform your piece as if the angels were singing it, as if you were making love to your oboe. Caress each note. (Remember to keep your throat open.)
Good luck!

Just practice your brains out and walk in there with confidence. Try to have that poker face going. YOu know, intimidate the competition just by acting really confident. It works for tiger woods.

Breathing excercises help alot also it helps to count - count anything - like floor tiles -ceiling tiles, how many exhales and inhales you are doing, etc. Someone gave me that advice about a year ago and it does work for anxiety and pressure.

Wash your hands in warm water before you go on stage!! And remember the only true competition is with yourself. Play your to your maximum potential and you will always win.

Try breathing exercises or clearing your head. Listen to relaxing music before tryouts.
