I have these stupid 3 stray cats that keep on pooping right in front of the door to my job office. How can that be stopped? The humane society wont come get them either.

Hi there...Common odours that are effective deterrents for cats are:

Citronella works best for cats as well as citrus scents such as orange or lemon (primarily towards cats), cayenne pepper, coffee grounds, pipe tobacco, lavender oil, lemon grass oil, citronella oil, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, and mustard oil.

"Havahart's Cat Repellent" uses capsaicin pepper and oil of mustard as its active ingredients. It repels by both taste and odor, has a lemon scent.

Every animal responds differently to each of these. Some will not be phased by them and others will be quite revolting.

For training purposes they are applied on items that are to encourage avoidance behaviours and not for use with a squirt bottle as they could harm the eyes or respiratory system. Test each substance and observe to see which works as a deterrent so that accidental injestion does not occur as some could then be fatal.

Coleus plants can be effective, but every cat responds differently so it is uncertain without experimenting.

Many people believe mothballs work, however they are considered toxic. Here's more information on this:

MOTHBALLS are toxic to cats which contains the ingredient Naphthalene. Mothballs are approximately twice as toxic as paradichlorobenzene, and cats are especially sensitive to naphthalene. Signs of ingestion of naphthalene mothballs include emesis, weakness, lethargy, brown-colored mucous membranes and collapses. Paradichlorobenzene mothballs may cause GI upset, ataxia, disorientation, and depression. Elevations in liver serum biochemical values may occur within 72 hours of indigestion.

Clean the spot real good with a good cleaner
such as Lysol Cleaner and then sprinkle pepper
in that spot. Once the cats notice the pepper they won't go to that spot again! They'll probably find another spot! Another method is
set up a litter box a distance away from the spot and the cats will likely use it instead!
Some cats can smell where a litterbox use to
be and tend to do mess there even if there is no litterbox there! They figure if the smell is there it must be okay! The pepper tactic usually works!

The problem is that they smell previous 'deposits' that they have made. In the cat world this amounts to a sign saying 'public restroom, poop here."

Bleach or something like Nature's Miracle may help (enzyme based product available at many pet shops). I've also gone to the 99 cent store and purchased chili power or black pepper. Doesn't last long but doesn't hurt the animal. Along with the bleach to kill the odor you may be able to use this to train them to get the message "this restroom is broken, please use the neighbors porch instead." ;)

Call animal control they can set out live traps to catch them.

I don't recommend being violent towards animals. You may end up breaking the law and getting into trouble. Animal cruelty laws are very tough and people turn you in if they see anything.

Try the citrus approach...but make sure there aren't any poisonous chemicals involved...or just make loud noises to scare them away!

Good luck.

Try orange spray. Cats don't like the smell of citrus.
