Take him to a shrink and they will do an exam and they will let you know. Good luck

I'm not sure what asd is but my son was diagnosed adhd at the same age. at 14 he was diagnosed mixed bipolar. i have been through this and it is very scary and frustrating for the parents.
pediatricians are good but are not much help in these situations. ask for a referral for a good child psychiatrist. they are better trained in these matters and can medicate better if needed. the book"the bipolar child" is a good reference. also find a child psychologist that he can talk to. i sincerely hope all of this works out for you.

Read information on MentalHelp.net under "bipolar". My understanding is that 8 is much too young for this diagnosis. He may have childhood depression. Watch him, but do not give positive reinforcement for his comments about death, that means - do not get visibly upset. Just listen.

well i would continue talking to him about how he is feeling and why. He may not be but he would need to see a doctor to be diagnosed. You may have to take him to a psyciatrist. Even if that means a trip to Sydney. But ask him questions, how does he sleep at night? what other symptoms does he show? Here is a web page for bipolar but I don't think that is it.
