you can do all those things in one day, if you start out real early in the morning! the trip to the statue of liberty is very time consuming because you have to wait on a long line, usually, to get on the boat. also, the trip to the top of the empire state building is a long, long wait. do them very early in the morning. if possible, you might skip going to the statue of liberty and just pass by it on the staten island ferry (which is a nice ride across the harbor).

Please do yourself a favor and skip the WTC site. It's a hole in the ground, a construction site. There's nothing to see there.

As for the rest, let me give you a quick one-day itinerary.

1. First thing in the morning (and I mean 8am) go to Battery Park and take the boat to Liberty Island to see the Statue of Liberty.
2. Once you're back in Battery Park, walk over to Bowling Green (laid out by the Dutch in the 1620s) take a look, then walk up Broadway. You'll pass Wall Street along the way and you can wander over to the NY Stock Exchange.
3. Keep walking up Broadway until you get to City Hall. To your right you'll see the Brooklyn Bridge. Take the time to walk out to the middle and you'll give your girl a stunning view of lower Manhattan and Brooklyn Heights.
4. Walk back to City Hall and get on the #4 train uptown to Grand Central Station. Be sure and take the time to see the station itself, it's spectacular. The Chrysler Building is just a block away and it's even more beautiful than the Empire State Building (but you'll get there too).
5. After you've seen the Chrysler Building, walk west along 42nd Street to Broadway. (You'll pass the NY Public Library and Bryant Park alone the way). Once you get to Broadway, welcome to Time Square! Walk around the square for a while and take it all in.
6. When you're ready, walk back to Fifth and head uptown. At 50th Street, you'll run smack into Rockefeller Center. If you want, go ice skating but be warned it's expensive.
7. Keep walking uptown and at 59th Street you'll run into Central Park. Walk into the park and walk along the lake. Head for the west side and you'll find the subway at Columbus Circle. Take the A Train uptown and the next stop is 125th Street. There's the Apollo. Take the train back downtown to Penn Station/34th Street and walk east on 34th Street. At Fifth Avenue, you'll find the Empire State Building. Go to the top and see the view.
