Are they really moral or right? Are they morally superior?

Mel Gibson, a Catholic (Christian without saints) was busted on a DWI, and then started cursing Jews when he was arrested.

Tom Delay, a born again Christian, and former house majority leader, traded donations for votes.

Rev. Ted Haggert led a 14,000 member church, and was the president of the evangelical association representing 30 million evangelicals. He was a valued member of the Christian evangelical leadership and was often asked his opinion by the White House. Today he admitted on camera that he bought meth from a male masseuse, bought didn't use it. Yeah right, and Bill Clinton didn't inhale. I'm sure it will soon come out that he did have sex with the male prostitute.

I'm just an atheist, but have a better grasp of ethics than any of these three "moral" Christians.

Do theists hold a monopoly on morals?

I think not.

You missed Mark Foley, a Catholic who sent sexual IMs and emails to boys.

I agree with you . Christians or theists do not hold a monopoly on morals.

I'm a born-again Christian for the past 25 years and have seen so much scandals in the Christian church as well as professing Christians and have come to the conclusion that going to church doesn't make you holy, righteous or morally upright.

Does walking into a garage make you a car ? Does going into a mosque make you a muslim ? Does going into a temple make you a Buddhist ? Certainly not.!

There are also some hypocrites I've seen in the Christian church that puts me off.

All these names you mentioned are some of those examples that puts people off, especially, ahtheists like yourself. There are lots more of these kind around the world.

At the end of the day, it is not whether one is a Christian, Muslim or whatever religious background he/she comes from. It is the invdividual's sincerity, honesty towards God and willingness to obey what God says in the Bible.

There are so many types of Christians you will come across in your life. I'm sorry and sad to see those you just mentioned. They bring shame to the Christian faith because they openly proclaim they are Christians and yet are found lacking in moral values and standards. I'm strongly against such people and hope and pray that they will repent and do what is right in God's eyes.

On the other hand, to be fair, I'm sure you have come across Christians who really live up to their faith , right ? So don't just look at the negative examples. Be encouraged to know that there are very sincere and good pracitsing Christians.

We live in an imperfect world, friend. So things are never going to be as ideal or right as we want to see it. Only God can set it right in His time in future.

"Moral majority" simply means that Christians are the Majority and are moral. "Religious right" simply means that the left is in general far less religious.

Mel Gibson's flaws are far less than that of many full on Catholic priests guilty of child molestation and outright murder.

Tom Delay and Ted Haggert are simply examples of those who profess to be religious but are still far from perfect. Had either of these men not have been in political positions, these events would never have seen the light and have been no different fron any of the other Christian sins the world is host to.

Using them as examples to discount all of Christianity is entirely and without question invalid.

"Do theists hold a monopoly on morals?"

No, certainly not. But the errors of Mel Gibson, Tom Delay, Rev. Haggert, and others are their own. Their religion may have contributed to their errors, but that doesn't mean that all Christians are guilty because a handful of Christians are.

First of all, the Moral Majority is a right wing, fundamentalist leaning organization. The Religious Right is a political designation identifying conservative, right wing, religious zealots of various denominational affiliations.

The people you sight have the same problems as all people who become too full of themselves and their opinions. Let's not cast all Christians in with the extremists. I'm Unitarian Universalist myself, but I know may progressive Christians who don't deserve to be lumped in with the likes of Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Baker, Oral Roberts and Jerry Falwell.

I totally agree with you. The people who spout religion as proving they are right are basically ignorant, arrogant idiots. I have a devout Christian as a afriend and he never spouts off, and says he messes up all the time despite believing in Jesus. But he believes that as long as he loves jesus, TRIES to do the right thing and repents then he will go to heaven. So, Mel Gibson is talking crock if he says he is a "REAL" Christian, as I would think my mate is a "real" one over him and those like him any day!

It's really a crazy phenomenon. It's almost as if these people are so worried about not "sinning" that they subconsciously drive themselves to "sin" more than the average person. They're so paranoid about Judgement Day and making their deity proud that they screw themselves up somehow. I don't know how else to explain it. One after the other is getting exposed doing things that they've openly and publicly condemned time and time again. It's just crazy.

'Religious Right' is not the same as 'Religious Correct'

'Religious Right' is referring to 'Religious Conservative'

where Left is Liberal and Right is Conservative.

please don't lump all of us Christians with these charlatans. Yes, there are bad apples that spoil the whole bunch, but the same thing can be said for any group.

Christians, just like all, deserve eternal punishment.
We are all sinners.
Thanks be to God for the suffering, death, and resurrection of the God/man Jesus Christ.
God now declares us justified before Him.

I can give plenty of examples of men who abuse religion for their own selfish purposes too, everyone can. I'm not a Christian, but I do believe in God, and believing in God doesn't automatically give you morals. Blame men for their actions, not religion.
