Hey! Does any one have any tips for getting kids to go to bed? The age range is 3&6, with a baby. Anything that is useful, is appreciated!

Avoid stimulating activies near bedtime, begin dimming the lights, turn off the tv and/or stereo. They'll soon get the idea that this is boring and will learn it's time to go to sleep.

Ok, tough one. It's all about timing....

6.45pm Kids into pyjamas. Baby into baby-gro. For kids, make it a condition of something good later on. e.g. if you want to stay up late and have extra stories, you'll need to get into your pyjamas, otherwise, it's just straight to bed!

7.00pm - put baby to bed (or at usual time) - little sing-song, put down, shut door... whatever the parent says usually works. Dont' worry if baby cries, she'll stop soon!

7.05pm - kids into bathroom - toilet, clean teeth, face wash. To make most efficient use of time, get them doing stuff in paralell! Constant commentary and upbeat - "come on now, let's brush our teeth like we're riding a camel" - anything really! Just make silly talk and keep them moving.

7.15pm - into bedroom. Then... simply outline how it's going to work. e.g. one story each, then kisses goodnight, and sleep. Then stick to it. You'll get pleading to have more stories, one will need to go to the toilet, the other will want a drink.. anything. Just be confident that you know they've been to the toilet, and had a little drink when they brushed their teeth, and so you know they're only trying it on...

Lastly, no matter what they tell you, mummy does not let them do that! Just tell them that what mummy lets them do doesn't matter - it's your rules tonight! The exception to this of course is that mummy may well do a little bedime routine which is important... so make sure you've asked what it is from mum before she goes out and do it!

7.30pm - five minute warning, then later a two minute warning, and finally one minute warning that stories will be over and you'll go downstairs.

7.35pm - Go downstairs. No matter what they say,...when you say your last good night and turn to leave, don't turn around. Just pretend you haven't heard, and go... happily saying "night night" all the way out the door. - If they really need something, they'll soon be downstairs. Otherwise, they're just trying it on!

What happens when they come downstairs afterwards? That's a whole other story!!

You have to make sure you know the kid first. If the child ever gets mad at you for some reason never raise your voice. Always do what the child wants to do remember the parents will hear from the kid and they are paying you. Also they might want you again if do well and you might even get a raise.

If u have any old books, bring them with you and let them choose one for you to read to them. And tell them if you don't try to go to sleep, then I won't read anymore. If that doens't work, try singing or playing some music that they like softly.

Stories, warm baths, my daughter would fall asleep in her swing. Rocking in a rocking chair also.
