Worked as both salesman and manager at several "independent" car lots over the years and it is a common practice. Because they can like somebody else posted is pretty much it. Normally they simply lie about what they have in the vehicle and then base your commission on the 'profit" shown. I caught them doing it to me at my first car job and was lucky in that the boss let me transfer from that car lot to another of his lots as a manager so I had full control over all sales and commission. What is hard to do as an independent is verify the actual costs of the vehicle as usually the owner of the lot buys them and can fudge the figures and auction receipts. Most longtime dealers have friends at the auction houses that will fake receipts for them. Don't forget that you are owned a commission on all the arranged financing as well, even from the "fly by night" loan companies.l They all pay "referral" checks to the car lot and they should be passed onto the salesman providing he or she even knows such a thing exists. Could write a book on that business, but nobody would believe all that really goes on. :-(

Because they are crooks that know nothing about integrity.

I used to work for a Suzuki/Subaru dealer and I loved to drive, I worked in service and sales at different car dealerships and have had driving and crash courses(we would crash cars on purpose to see how safe they were) on many different makes. Subaru's are probably the safest cars out there. I was at work one day and went to run an errand for the service department. I wanted to take the Subaru service car. I got stuck taking the Suzuki. I got into a small car accident but the way the car reacted to the accident, well I am now unemployable because of the pain I am in. I have been disabled by this small accident. Had I been driving a Subaru I would still be working today. Why? Subaru has passive as well as active safety features, built better to absorb impacts and better handling. Thanks to the Suzuki I am in constant pain.
In answer to your question, yes they are okay cars they look good and if mmaintained properly they can last, but all cars can if they are m,aintained. Are they safe NO!

That's the car business. What percentage of salesman have you heard tell a lie when their closing a deal. They lie to don't they. It is an occupational hazard.
Try going into brokering. The grass really IS greener.

-----From what I have heard, the cheating on commissions is endemic in the sales world, on all levels. It seems to be the nature of the beast. I have never worked in sales. -----Jim
