Yes. My husband was in the Air Force and knew MANY atheist / agnostic and generally non-faithful / nonreligious servicemen and women.

I was a cold warrior and never in combat. But I spent my share of time in a fox hole. I have also thought I was going to die at least twice. I didn't waste a second thinking "gee maybe.."

You see I am quite sure that there isn't a god. And the little tiny space I allow for being wrong is not occupied by any one single organized religion. I am quite certain they are wrong.

I don't see what's so darned great about fox holes. I'm claustrophobic, and you'll never find THIS atheist in one!

I'd rather be an atheist at the mall or something.

Question goes back to WW1. Still hard to answer. I have known soldiers who were in the fox holes and said that most soldiers when dying were crying out for their mother.

You do not need religion to tell you not to go in a fox hole.

I'm not an atheist, and I don't now. But if someone is so desperate that they pray to a God they have never believed in, does this prove that God exists? No, it does not.

Yes, I am a Navy veteran and an atheist. There are many of us. You can see pics of me speaking at last year's Atheists in Foxholes event, at the link below if you are interested.
