I think it depends entirely on YOUR financial situation. Never give more than you can afford. And it depends how close you are to the parents, and how well you know the kid.
Do not base your gift on what the reception costs! That is something the couple should do without expecting money in return for feeding you!
We went to a reception for the son of a friend recently. We gave them some money, and I made a card on the computer with their names on it, and on the back, I put a design and "Created specially for Mary and John". When we got the thank you note, they said they were going to use the money towards their honeymoon, and said they really liked the personalized card.

I guess it would depend on how well you know the person and how extravagant the wedding is...I have to disagree with some of the previous answers. Unless these people are "loaded", or everything is handed to them, cash is ALWAYS good. Yes, a gift card is tacky. If you had a child who was getting married, how much would you think they should give. Do that.

For the child of a good friend getting married, I think $100.00 would be a very nice gift.

If you are attending the reception, try to find how much the per plate cost is and factor this amount into your gift.
I'd say $100 per person and $25/50 more if you have children attending as guests as well.
If you're only attending the ceremony and depending on how close your are, use your discretion; maybe $75 pp.
Then again.. this is only my cents.

NEVER GIVE CASH FOR A PRESENT!
Never give a loaded Walmart card!
TACKY, tacky, tacky.
If you do not know this person well enough to know what to get him, don't.
Ask the mother what they need, and go get it, remove the price tag, wrap it beautifully, and hand it to them.
The amount depends on how much money you make and how well you know the kid and if you approve of the marriage.
If you are a millionaire, give thekid a $2000 painting in a style they like. If you are on Social Security, attach a nice card to a wrapped silver -plated picture frame you bought at TJ MAXX.
If you hleped raise this kid, make a collage of pictures of him in Halloween costumes throughout his life, and put them in a nice frame, and give that.
i would rather get a hand-made pair of socks than a $1000 on a card from someone who didn't even bother to wrap it.

Just had a wedding for my daughter, most of the gifts received were 100.00 dollars. I guess probably would depend on how extravagant these people are. We are everyday.....

I think 100 dollars would be a decent amount. If you think thats too much, even 50 would be generous.

Find out where they are registered for gifts, that way you dont have to fret about the amount, and you will know they want what you give them : )
