I concussion is a mild brain injury caused by either an indirect or direct blow to the head. It is mostly seen in sports injuries and vehicle accidents. There are many types of concussions and I suspect that your boyfriend has a grade 1 which isnt too bad. Below is a link for you to read that should shed some light on the subject. I suspect that he will be fine with no permanent damage.

A concussion occurs when the head sustains a hard blow and the impact jars or shakes the brain inside the skull, interrupting the brain's normal activities. Although there may be cuts or bruises on the head or face, there may be no other visible signs of a brain injury.

Symptoms of a concussion usually include any of the following changes in the person's level of consciousness, such as:

Brief loss of consciousness.
Inability to remember what happened immediately before and after the injury (amnesia).
Confusion.
Asking the same question over and over.
Dizziness, vertigo, lightheadedness, or unsteadiness that prevents standing or walking.
Blurred or double vision.
Ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
In a small child, increased fussiness or lack of energy.
Symptoms of concussion can be mild to severe, depending on the severity of the injury. If the injury is more serious, symptoms will usually develop within the first 24 hours after the accident. Symptoms may last for days, weeks, or even months following the injury.

Hope this helps.

When you hit your head hard enough to bump your brain against the skull, that's a concussion. It causes slight bleeding and pressure.
It's a good thing that he went to the hospital. That is where he needs to be right now.
You can always call the ER and ask the nurse to either put him on the phone or to give him the message to call you.
Most of the time, they will comply with this.
Hope all is well.

concussions that are serious cause swelling of the brain, there isn't alot of room inside the skull for the brain to swell and it is a dangerous situation. Sometimes, surgeons have to drill holes in the skull to relieve the pressure, sometimes all that is needed is anti-inflammatory medications like steroids to reduce the inflammatory response to the injury caused by the concussion. Just don't jump to conclusions, wait till you hear how he is.

gee, you had me scared, when I saw this question I was worried you were having a concussion and were asking what to do.
don't worry about him, he'll be fine, concussions aren't a threat if you get to the hospital quickly. it won't lead to anything as long as you get immediate medical attention. it sounds like that's what he did, so don't worry about it. you should only worry if he had alcohol or aspirin around the time of his concussion.
