It depends. If it lands upside down, the blood will stay in the cranial cavity longer, and you might have a few moments longer of consciousness then if it lands sideways or right side up. Since there is no pumping organ in your head, it won't be forced out as long as it remains inverted, and so long as there is still oxygen in the blood, the brain should function. That is, if it just doesn't go into some sort of shock where it blocks all external stimuli that is telling it "Oh man, you're in trouble now"
At least this is my theory. I saw somewhere on the net (I think snopes, but not sure) that they used to try to study this with beheaded people back in the 18th and 19th century, and concluded there were a few cases where they observed conscious recognition from the head. you might want to google "studies on beheadings" or something like that.
congratulations - This is probably about the weirdest question I've answered, but I couldn't help myself.

The immediately drop in blood pressure or the lack of oxygen going to the brain will normally cause you to die within 3 minutes
However, you wont be alive any longer than 3 seconds if you lose your head as there is both a drop in blood pressure and immediate lack of oxygen.
The best solution of course is not to lose one's head.

No blood flow to brain = no brain activity. Even if the brain gives off electric impulses for up to 8 minutes after the body has died, you'd have about as much consciousness as Terri Schiavo, that is to say you may have instinctive motor function (but what's the use with no extremities), but no cognitive thought.

I work for Orthopaedic surgeons and I asked on e of them that question. He said you wouldn't be conscious, because you would immediately go into
shock.
