Yes. If the string is tight, then the can captures the sound and makes the string vibrate. The string vibrates the other can and you can hear sounds. It's quite and muffled, but it works.

It's primative but effective. Yes it works. But only over very short distances. Maybe ten feet or so. Depending on the cans, and the type of string. And don't go around corners. It kinda blocks the reception.

It works!! I did it as a kid. The string must be tight, with a big knot in each can.. Great.. No dialing, no telemarketers, no bill.. Fun..

No. It only works to show the suckers that hold up the line. You know, when up call people up to hold up the line so you can hear better.
