We have a kiddie pool for our dogs. They LOVE it! I have a lab mix and a jack/beagle mix. My neighbors say we spoil them because when they're not at home playing in their pool, we're out on the boat and the dogs spend all day playing at the sandbar. Is that spoiling? I thought we were giving them exercise while keeping them cool :)

It's not that I really care what my neighbors think. I just wanted some opinions from other dog lovers to get a sense of what other people think "spoiling" is. My dogs are like my children. My bank knows them, as well as every other drive through service that I frequent. My dogs are known by everyone in my life because they are almost always with us when we're not at work.

Some people believe that dogs are happy living outside all the time. I don't see that? I guess I just wanted to see if people feel that someone like me is overdoing it a little.

I know my dogs are happy. My lab mix actually smiles at us when she's really excited. The JRT mix, well he's just a hppy dog all around as long as he's with his family.

Your dogs don't sound spoiled. They sound LOVED. My dog LOVES her kiddie pool. We buy pools for our kids, why not for our dogs? She likes to keep cool too. Dogs need to be active... if they're not they can become destructive. If you're taking your dogs out on a boat with you, it sounds like they're well trained, well-mannered, & all around great dogs... probably because they have owners who actually give a darn. Good for you! If that's spoiling... more dogs deserve to be spoiled!

This isn't spoiling them. If you cooked them fancy meals with human food, spend $20 a day on toys, etc., then you'd be spoiling them. It sounds like you're just trying to let your dogs have a lot of fun and expand their minds. But really, who cares what your neighbors think? It's not like you've got a meth lab going on or anything that actually affects them. Go ahead and let your dogs play on the sandbar or in the pool.

I agree with everyone else. Who cares what your neighbors think, your dogs are being brought up in a healthy and active environment that is wonderful for them. You love them and it shows, better than leaving them at home to bark and whine that you're gone. :) I have a 7 week old Lab full blood and as soon as she's old enough (probably in the spring or summer) she'll be going boating, fishing, hiking, etc. with us. I don't care if it's spoiling her or not, she's mine. =P

Who cares? Spoil your dogs if you want to, they are your dogs not your neighbors and plus a spoilt dog is a the only kind of dog. you are letting them live life other people like your neighbor would just get a dog and throw it in the back yard. not nice!

that isn't spoiling your buddies. do they have a kiddie pool for thier kids? same thing. (why don't non pet owners understand that they are like children!!) you're absolutely right, that is great excercise and you are aware of the possibility of over heating. my dogs have a kiddie pool and they don't so much play in it, but they'll stand in it and drink a little then get back out. it works great in the summer heat! they especially like when i just throw a bag of ice in there...my puppy will play with the ice and throw it around the yard....

I have an Old English Bulldog and she has to have the air condition on when it is almost 70 degrees in the house in the summer. That isn't spoiling her that is keeping her comfortable. And I believe that is what you are doing for your dogs. And they probably enjoy it anyway.

Your neighbors are crazy! Can I come back in my next life as your dog?? You can't consider that spoiling, it is just great care-taking. Your neighbor just doesn't get love for a pet.

You are doing nothing wrong with your dogs. Your dogs are part of the family, and your neighbors just dont get it. Dogs needs lots of excercise to stay healthy. Excercise will also help dogs from becoming bored and from developing bad or unwanted behaviors. Keep doing what youre doing and enjoy!!

And you are! Nothing wrong with what you are doing for you babies! Not everyone perceives their pets in the same way I guess. In my house, they are just 4 legged children and are just as important to us and the human children we have. But I said once to someone that losing a pet was like losing a family member and they freaked out and said absolutely not the same. So not everyone feels as some of us do.
