What bugs me is generalizations like this. If you would care to rephrase the question to something along the lines of "Why do some people hate Starbucks?" it would make for a much fairer presentation.
Personally, I don't hate Starbucks. Or their products. Or their staffers, who always seem friendly and cheerful. And I like the ambience of the place.
Does that make me socially inept because I'm not frothing at the mouth over the conditions coffee plantation workers work under? Not really. There is nothing new there, except that conditions are gradually improving. It a little unrealistic to expect to waltz into a third world country and expect them to apply western work ethics and unionized policies to their workers. It took a while for us to arrive at that point in this country (ever hear of the Industrial Revolution?) and they, too, will make that step.

I have bought a few cups of Starbucks coffee and was never EVER like "oh wow that was so good" I make far better coffee at home using my grinder and french press. If I had to, and Starbucks was the only thing around I'd buy a plain house blend and add my own sugar and milk but even then it'd taste a bit over done. Someones description of it being burnt was very good, I think that's very true. I also don't like that Starbucks calls their workers barista's, it's as if they've made up a word to go with what these (mostly) chicks do.

Im partial to them but thats only because there arent heaps where I am (australia) Ive only ever seen one and even then I got there signature hot chocolate which was way too sweet and half of it was cream, needless to say I felt sick afterwards from the overload of sugar, and it was like 5.70$ for it as well which is kind of ridiculously overpriced, the only thing I like there are the double chocolate muffins (even though they dont taste like 100% chocolate they taste like they have bran added to them) but still even then it's like 4.20$ for a muffin, I mean I know they have to charge a certain amount but everyone is buying from there so why not lower the prices? They'll have more people buying then. I've heard that in america theres a star bucks on almost every block, is this true?

My honest opinion of this is that it is fashionable to hate corporations. Corporate America, while having their share of badguys has been portrayed in the media as being a horrible bullyish brute. I have seen the term "Evil corporation" too many times in movies, websites, blogs and forum postings to not believe this is the case.
It is also fashionable to hate success these days. Hating Starbucks, Microsoft...the list goes on is just "where the cool kids are at".
Starbucks treats their employees great by the way. Not too many companies offer benefits to part timers.

I would go every once in a while because the product is not that bad and in Chicago it is a good place to study. When I found out they were raising the price and adding more stores I just decided they were coming across to greedy. Now I go to small local places that are unique and not so corporate cookie cutter.

its kind of expensive and abuses "lifestyle" marketing. somehow if you drink starbucks you are supposed to be more awesome than if you drink the competitors. too bad there are millions of people just as awesome as every other secretary with a carmel macchiato she paid six bucks for. the coffee really isn't that awesome. its like the california wine of coffee. its a good corporation to work for.

Although they provide easy chairs and tables, the coffee they serve costs around 5 cents but they charge you 2 dollars - in other words, it's too expensive!

My youngest daughter is an Assistant Manager at a newly opened one. She likes the company, management style, corporate structure etc. As for people not liking it, I would hate to see the traffic at her store if people liked it. The joint is at least half full with people in line all the time. I have to buy a cup if I want to talk to her.
Not really, she seems to like me enough to talk to me free.

I think what bothers most people about Starbuck's is the ridiculous price of their coffee.
